The Town Horror Show Continues

By: Robert Salt
Date: 10/01/2007

THE Mariners were hoping to put a run of defeats, including the 4-0 New Years Day party hangover performance behind them tonight against Chester City, however Town were well beaten and the horror show goes on and on and on....

Home > 2006-2007 Season > Reports > Chester (h)

The Mariners lined up with two loan players making their debut, Rizo a left sided winger from MK Dons and Grand, a centre back from Carlisle, also starting on the right since making his switch permanent was right winger Peter Till.

The match started, and with rain both before and during the match the surface was very slippery and wet, both teams seemed to cancel each other out without either team being able to threaten, however it was the visitors who seemed to have the edge.

The first attempt on goal was from a town set piece, however the resulting headed effort on goal was too far out and too weak to trouble the Chester keeper.

A dull and lacklustre first half followed, and town keeper Barnes reacted quickly to stop a virtually point blank range attempt out and the resulting attempt back was cleared off the town goal line.

The only real attempt on the Chester goal in the first half came from Macca, the veteran right back linking up well to unleash a powerful 25 yarder which went just over the crossbar with the keeper beaten.

Shortly afterwards Newey linked well with Rizo on the left and put in a decent cross with Jones waiting to latch onto it the Chester keeper managed to claim the cross in the nick of time.

Just before half time town keeper Barnes produced a fine stop to deny a Chester player who headed a long deep cross towards the corner of the goal.

A very poor Town first half ended with all Town fans not impressed with what they saw.

The start of the second half saw skipper Justin Whittle out 2 minutes before the rest of his team mates, surely a half time Buckley special would have sorted them out, we soon found out it hadn't

The second half seemed worst than the first, Town could not string three passes together, no tackles going in, too many set pieces were completely wasted and the lack of marking was clear for all to see.

It was no surprise when Chester took the lead, a corner was bravely headed in with the Town defence AWOL.

The Chester second came from a cross from the left where the Chester player was able to run un challenged, cross for the Chester player to fire into the Town net, another poor goal to concede.

By this time game over, many fans were leaving and it was clear to see that we could not even score one goal, never mind two.

A run that has seen no points and no goals scored has put Town right back into trouble, and on this performance conference football is a reality unless we can get back to playing the same football when Buckley first arrived back.

Confidence is at an all time low, maybe somebody at GTFC can order some from EBay ?

MOM: Tom Newey, the only player that really seemed to care and realise what position we are in.
