Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

16/07/2000 Rant

New Stadium!

What is going on with 'our' local council? How can they possibly vote against a decision that is supported by a majority of the people they are supposed to represent? Isn't that what 'democracy' is all about?

Once again, instead of looking forward and choosing to endorse something which the people of Grimsby and Cleethorpes can be proud of, the local council choose the status quo.

I think the local councillors have misjudged the strength of feeling which exists in the community for Grimsby Town FC. Instead of representing the views of local people, these councillors chose to further their own political ends, whatever they are. Grimsby Town FC cannot afford to stagnate, we need to move on to another level and the new stadium was a must in order to generate revenue to strengthen the squad.

I also find it absolutely incredible that the law does not allow councillors who support football and their local club to vote in such a debate. I understand the need for them to declare their interests but to then exclude them from the debate and from voting is a farce. Where will it end? Will councillors who regularly visit the cinema be excluded from any debate about developing a local cinema? I think not.

The Council have made a big error in judgement, they have consigned a much loved football club to lower division football and they have sent out a message that this town is going nowhere. I for one will not be supporting my local councillor at the next local elections but I will continue to whole-heartedly support Grimsby Town FC.

Up the Mariners!
