Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

Millwall Report Card

By: Dr Fishy
Date: 19/01/2003

WELL, it's fair to say that Dr Fishy is not happy. It's bad enough that a old boy like myself should have to pay full whack to see the Mariners play, but to be subjected to that load of rubbish yesterday made it even harder to stomach.

Home > 2002-2003 Season > Report Cards > Millwall (h)

In fact, it's difficult to look at any player and think: "he played well". On this evidence there are contenders for 'worst player of the season' and 'not being able to find their backside with both hands'.

Coyne: It's only thanks to the Welsh number four keeper that Town only lost 2-0. He blocked a shot from Claridge and saved from Wise just before the goal. The woodwork should get some praise here too, as it stopped two shots as well.

Grade: C

McDermott: On yesterday's showing it looks as though Macca isn't quite fully fit, despite being 'rested' in midweek. He was guilty of giving the penalty away.

Grade: C-

Gallimore: Town's very own number three was quite steady throughout the game although he was constantly tested. He nearly fell over when preparing for a long throw, which amused many.

Grade: C

Chettle: It was a decent performance from the aging defender who put himself about a bit and showed an experienced head in tight situations. Probably Town's best player over the full 90 minutes.

Grade: C+

Ford: Bit of a miserable game for the youngster. Made too many mistakes for my liking although he threatened at Town's very few set pieces. Didn't appear to benefit from the midweek rest either.

Grade: D+

Cooke: Did okay overall but he never looks like he can get past his man. A lot of his crosses were either blocked or deflected, but despite this he at least looked interested.

Grade: C

Barnard: Wasn't quite sure whether Barnard was playing or not. I think he was because some Town fans started shouting when the ball was given away cheaply.

Grade: D-

Campbell: Over the first 45 minutes he deserved a grade of B- but in the second half he just disappeared without a trace, and with no explanation. For not informing us of his disappearing act he gets.

Grade: C

Groves: Not sure why he got the sponsors' man of the match. He had a shot in the second half, which dragged wide but apart from that he offered very little and looked off the pace.

Grade: D

Livingstone: Didn't win much in the air, he was always late in the jump and constantly stood five yards in front of their keeper when he was about to kick.

Grade: E

Boulding: This was a very quiet second 'debut' for Quick Mick. He hardly got a look in and had to feed off scraps from rare Livvo flick-ons or defensive mistakes.

Grade: C-

SUBS

Mansaram and Soames: Technically they weren't on long enough (has to be at least 20 minutes to get a grade) so they escape punishment. Not that they deserve it in such a way as the rest of the team do though. Mansaram at least got a shot away and Soames had two efforts blocked in a penalty area scramble.

Overall conclusion: I feel disappointed at the way in which Town looked completed disinterested. I thought that perhaps some players would have benefited from a rest during the midweek game but I was proved wrong. The referee didn't help in certain situations, a very whistle-happy ref who could have done with the pea going missing.

Grade Guide

A*This is almost impossible to achieve as I will refuse to give anyone this grade - unless they score six goals and get opposing players sent off.
AThis is more possible to achieve, although the player must have had a brilliant game i.e. he can't have put a foot wrong all match.
A-The player must have performed superbly, setting up goals, scoring goals, making match-winning tackles etc.
B+The player played to a very high standard indeed having been influential throughout the 90 minutes.
BThis can be achieved if the player had a very good game overall but could be forgiven for making one or two minor mistakes.
B-The player put in a performance worthy of special mention for his efforts on the pitch or otherwise having a good game.
C+A mark for players who have had an average game but at the same time played well in patches and may have had an impact on the final score.
CAn average performance but not worthy of being dropped for the next game - a competent performance.
C-Start thinking about the player's attitude and commitment on the pitch. Showed little effort and was probably invisible for most of the match.
D+Poor game and realistically shouldn't feature in the next game.
DThis player shouldn't be playing in the near future.
D-The player deserves to be fined for his abysmal performance
EThe player should be sacked
F And then shot
