Danny Butterfield

Vastly underrated during his time at Blundell Park, often the target of the boo-boys and only now is he seen as a genuine talent.

Started out as John McDermott’s replacement in making, although made his first team debut on the right-wing against Hull. As Macca’s injuries became more frequent, so did Butterfield’s name on the team sheet. At one point young Danny was keeping a fully fit Macca out the team.

However something happened, no-one is aware what exactly but overnight Butterfield struggled. Lennie Lawrence decided Butterfield was best as a defensive midfielder, much to the puzzled fans objections. After 6 months in midfield Butterfield returned to the right flank, first to wing-back and later as a winger.

His final two months turned out to be his best, as his passing ability set up several goals for the Boulding/Allen partnership to fire Town away from the relegation zone. The summer saw Butterfield leave after Town could not afford to renew his contract. Despite rumours of Town rejecting a £1million bid for Crystal Palace the previous year, he went to the same club for nothing.

Returned to Blundell Park last season to set up the final goal in a miserable 4-1 defeat.
