Dean Gordon

Probably one of the best signings Russell Slade made for Town in his first season. The introduction of former Premiership left back Dean Gordon saw Grimsby take up more of a fighting status. Gordon for me was the best player for Town in the first half of the season and was not scared of getting stuck in.

Gordon originally started off at Crystal Palace in 1991, making over 200 appearances at Selhurst Park. Gordon chucked in Palace 3 years after there relegation from the Premiership in 1994/1995 and made a £900,000 switch to Middlesborough.

Injury checked Gordon's progress with his new Premiership side, but he often played well when he was fit. He was loaned out to Cardiff City in 2001 before being released at the end of the 2001/2002 season.

Gordon returned to Division 1 and joined Coventry City and he moved in to Highfield Road as a regular straight away. Injury yet again was Gordon's Achilles heel and after making around 50 appearances for the Sky Blues and a short loan spell at Reading he was released at the end of the 2003/2004 campaign.

A few days into the new season he was a surprise addition to the Grimsby squad in League Two, with a lot feeling that he was too superior to be playing in the league and was worthy of playing much higher football. However Gordon trundled on and played his heart out in the 4 or so months he spent at Blundell Park.

Amazingly he left Town without a reason, or so we thought, Gordon had fallen out with Slade over something, and left out of the blue. He was linked in the papers and over the Internet to Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday but instead joined up with ex-Middlesbrough team mate Hamilton Ricard at Cypriot League Champions Apoel Nicosia.

The champions of Cyprus had also qualified for the UEFA Champions League Qualification round, which will see Gordon playing in the ever-famous championship.

Next Player: Michael Keane
