Beating Man City 4-1 and thinking Town would make it to what is now the Prem i think we eventually finished 5th after a late run of poor results?

Beating Liverpool away. Was on the backfoot all game defending wildly. With Danny Coyne putting in one of his best performences and he just would not be beaten. It took a penalty for them to finally put one past him and even that he almost saved.

Then that last minute wonder goal was just magic. It seemed to go in slow motion.

Kev Drinkell got a hat-trick? Think that was my first Town game.

For me either beating Burnley in the AWS Northern Final to get to Wembley or that whole day against Bournemouth.

The day before Fenty became involved with the club.

The day Darlo signed Tommy Wright.

Being escorted from the Pontoon Stand and tied to one of the makeshift seats in the Pontonn/Main Stand open corner by a steward.
Made to watch the match versus West Bromwich Albion from there until half time. It started to rain so I was sent back to my Pontoon Stand seat. We won 2-0. Lee Ashcroft was behind the prank although he tried to deny it.

There's all the usual ones like Liverpool, Everton, Newcastle, Wembley, Wimbledon etc but my abiding memory will always be Shaun Cunnington climbing up the fence in front of the 1200 Town fans at Elm Park when he scored the winner in the 4th Round FA Cup Replay against Reading the round before we played Wimbledon.

Another is doing the conga in the pouring rain on a Tuesday evening at Plymouth with the other 100 or so Town fans when we beat them 2-1. It was a big relegation 6 pointer and Super Clive scored his first ever goal for us. At the end of the season we stayed up and they were relegated.

Exeter game 1972 when we won 3-0 to clinch the league title.Fantastic atmosphere. Rattles (showing my age) and home made banners everywhere. I remember after the game walking down the Grimsby Road with thousands singing.

41 last week  

At home v Scunny circa 1990 Tuesday night game. 11 000+. They scored first and we scored twice in last 20 or so mins. I was in the ponny and still a schoolboy but the comaradary (sp) I felt that night as the goals went in lives with me to this day. Absolutely fanatastic night going completely mental with everyone else when we scored, jumping all over random people and being transported several rows in the process. Remember being totally out of breath, but having a massive smile on my face after each goal was scored such was the celebrations. Brilliant night that I'll never forget. Don't think I'll ever feel that way again about Town. Wembleys were good but this was the one stand out moment for me.

Everton 2-1 for me.

Standing on Wembley Way with me Dad and Bro on Dad's 1st ever trip to London, with his packing-up in a Petit's bag for Town's 1st ever visit. Amazing. Everton and Liverpool victories run it very close though.

Yeah,that was great.Don't think i've ever seen so many people on Grimsby Road and most of them were singing their heads off.

The comeback against Barnsley.Losing 2-0 and won 3-2.The Pontoon went crazy.

When we hammered Sheff Utd 4-0.

That wonderful goal Cockerill scored after a sweeping move from one end of the pitch to the other.

The night we beat Everton at Blundell park.Was packed to the rafters and i got crushed againt the fence in the Harrington St corner,which was the only place i could get in,the ground was that full.

Seeing Bobby Cumming wink at us in the Barratt after getting Norman Hunter sent off.

Playing Coventry off the pitch in the League cup only to give away a home goal and go out on away goals.

All the usual ones like Wembley,Everton,Liverpool etc.

Got some great memories of other teams as well.Fulham and West Ham being two that came here and played us off the pitch in the past.

Sure there are plenty of others that will come to me but i'm all depressed now,thinking how good things have been in the past.

The Wembley games were happy, happy days. The Liverpool match stands out for the pure euphoria of the nature and timing of Jevons' goal, but for me the Tottenham game is still the most emotional moment I can recall watching town.

I was having a bit of a shít time of it generally back then, and had a particularly shít day leading up to the match. That goal, that unexpected goal just seemed to make everything else melt away and just reinforced, there and then, why I bother following Town through all of the bad times. I
remember bumping into my dad on the half-way line following the pitch invasion - a mutual hug, a sort of "I owe this to you" kind of moment. Raw, joyous, emotions.

All of them feelings that no plastic Premier League fans will ever experience. The lows are so low, but watching your hometown club who you've supported since you could walk achieve something amazing fills you so much pride.

I think that's the reason we all do this.

Seen the games Exeter first time to Spurs.  The thing that really got to me was Buckley and Groves coming out of that tunnel for the first Wembley visit. A Town fan had never seen a Grimsby side walk out at Wembley ever before,that was emotional. Even got into trouble from my sons as tears ran down. Nothing like it,and to win twice in the space of a few weeks was just a very very good feeling.

I'll always remember that night. Scunny were singing 'You're not singing anymore'. Then we scored 2 and the whole ground, including the Main was pointing and singing 'You're not singing anymore' to them....makes the hairs on the back of the neck stick up.

For me Wimbledon with Harry Haddock was a great fun day but winning against quite a strong Liverpool team at Anfield has to be the one.

I was at that game - Its bizarre how much football has changed since then, for the worse.  You don't get goal celebrations (at either end) like that any more.  Floppa somehow getting above Mark lever defies the laws of physics, as does two Iron players fighting over and missing a header 4 yards out before GY scuppered us.

The whole Wembley day against Bournemouth. Also Cov City away in the FA Cup (1969?). BP was my football experience up until then and I'd never seen so many people at a football match. I was enthralled even tho we lost 1-0 to a dodgy penalty scored by Grimsby-born Mick Coop.

i have some fond memory of that era, was also a school kid at this time and totaly agree with this. spurs at home in 91 sticks out, never seen the ponny so rammed, except against Newcastle maybe the year we had put there million game winning streak to a end at st james park, was it jim dobin that scored?

The first Wembley game was just pure bliss (even the wobbly spell when Bournemouth scored). Choked when I saw that sweep of black and white stretch all around from Royal Box, round the end and a fair way up the other side.

But the other memory that sticks out now is my first ever game, surrounded by what seemed like a massive crowd. It probably just seemed that way cos I was surrounded by adults as I didn't want to go and stand by the fence with all the other kids. A real ding dong game which Town won 4-3 against Donny in what must have been the League Cup in 1971. A great way to catch the bug.

In no particular order:

Town 3 Exeter 0 (71/72 Championship clincher)

Town 1 WBA 0  (95? Bonetti's goal in what was supposed to be his last game for us)

Liverpool 1 Town 2 (2001)

Wimbledon 3 Town 6 (1980) On the way home BBC Radio called us the Liverpool of Division 3)

Town 3 Barnsley 2 (Good Friday game circa 82. Town 2-0 down inside about 25 minutes)

Everton away with it being virtually last minute winner and then walking past the dozens of coaches lined up outside

the first match i went to i was sat in the upper. town was 1-0 against and ended up winning 3-1, fell in love with the club from that day. spurs in the cup and the 6-5 vs burnley were brilliant as well

Chelsea 2 Town 3 Dec '83

After being locked in the basement of M&S in Oxford Street due to a bomb scare (Harrod's actually was bombed) I came out to try and get the tube to Fulham Broadway and due to many lines also being closed because of these threats got to the game just as it was kicking off

I couldn't get in the Town end behind the goal so had to go in the side stand with the Chelsea and of course them going 2-0 up I had to ask why I had bothered struggling to get there

But the outcome when we got three back and played them off the pitch has to be one of the best feelings ever watching Town.....to say I was bursting with pride is an understatement, but such a pity I couldn't celebrate as all around me were Chelsea fans losing their rag as their team lost the match!

One BIG one and head and shoulders above anything else.

Watching GTFC walk out of the tunnel at WEMBLEY.  Something I never really thought I would see.


Talking of memories.

I remember driving home from Portsmouth one Friday afternoon.  I was listening to Talk Sport.  Each week they used to interview a club "chairman.  This particular week it was the turn of none other than Mr P Furneaux of GTFC.  I can't remember the date, but it was after 1998.  He was asked (I can't remember the exact question), it was either your favourite or your proudest footballing memory.  His reply, "being in the stadium when Banks made that save.  Well sorry folks, I know he witnessed history, but not even a mention of a Town memory from their own chairman.  IMO just plain wrong. (But in his case, not surprising)
