Duncan Edwards (Bobby Charlton said that he would have captained England in winning the World Cup).
Saw Best play in 1970 at Brummie. My dad took me out of school to see him at a FAC semi-final replay at Villa Park.
Definitely Duncan Edwards and Tommy Taylor. The Town side of the 30s of course but also the Arsenal side of the 30s that had Cliff Bastin, Alex James, David Jack and Ted Drake. I saw Tom Finney and Mathews but I really would have liked to see Len Shackleton. |

I have a question.
Ronaldo il Fenomeno was the last footballer I saw on TV (apart from perhaps Ronaldinho) who would genuinely have you sitting on the edge of your seat. He was virtually unplayable in a period of better quality defenders.
But was this because I was in my mid-teens then and more impressionable? I can admire Messi and C.Ronaldo’s brilliance but they are almost mechanical in their output.
I think the original Ronaldo was the best forward probably ever in the history of the game.However I think if your looking just at pure skill and tricks and ways of getting past your opponent I would still say Ronaldinho and Christiano Ronaldo were better in that order. |

Bobby Cummings. The older generation on here hold him in such high regard. Would be interesting to see one of those tackles live?!?!
It wasn't so much the actual tackle, although that was earth shattering in itself, it was more the anticipation. Most often it was in front of the Barratt Stand and most often fairly early in the game. You saw their bloke jinking along with the ball and you saw Bobby C. coming for him ....... and there was this delicious moment when you knew what was about to happen. Then in a flash it was over and Bobby C. was in his customary pose of arms out explaining to the ref that he got the ball, the trainer was administering CPR to their player and the crowd were going crackers. What a player, you missed a treat! The next bit of fun was the next time their player got the ball passed to him he would be so busy looking for Bobby C. that he missed it! |

You would see him winding up for the tackle as he ran towards the man with the ball, it must have scared the living sh*t out of little skinny wingers. Often he took the ball, the man and anybody daft enough to be close by. After a couple of early crunches from him opposing players would often want nothing more to do with the game. Not a skilled craftsman but gave everything for Town. Some of our teams in the last 20 years would not have been so sh*t if he'd been in the team, he wouldn't have allowed them to be. Legend is overused in football, but he is a Town legend. |
