September had brought us a mixed bag of results. We had progressed in the cup and had drawn league 2 leaders Norwich City at Blundell Park later in October. Town had tasted consecutive league defeats for the first time at Southend and Lincoln, was the bubble about to burst ? On the plus side our average home attendance had risen to 9949 and we were still scoring goals, especially at home. Matt Tees still led the scoring charts with 7 goals closely followed by Stuart Brace and Alan Woodward with 5 apiece. Incredibly Town were to play 9 games in 28 days in October, something which today's players would struggle to cope with. I have been inside Blundell Park on many occasions when the atmosphere has been deemed to be electric, however the match against Norwich this month was something I have rarely if ever experienced since, other than the final game of this season against Exeter. The match against Fulham in the play off semi's in 98 was fantastic but imagine an additional 13719 Mariners fans on top of that attendance and you get a feeling of how it felt that evening. So lets move on to October's results.

Hope you enjoy October. In the final picture on the left hand side you can see Lew Chatterley playing for Northampton, a player who was to join Town this season and become a great success during the season.

I went to that Norwich game........was it John Deehan who scored for them first ?......with a Stuart Gray getting the equalizer near the end......header in top corner a Pontoon end?
As you say amazing atmosphere.......

I think John Deehan was later. He scored against us in the 1984(?) Milk Cup game against us.

Years later I was working with a Brummie called Deehan who turned out to be his cousin.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.

That Norwich game. Was in the Pontoon, as usual, and couldn't move - it was crammed to the rafters. Think it was about midway through the second half when Jimmy Thompson(?) headed a ball from about 30 to 35 yards out which just went over the Norwich bar. Everyone in the Pontoon thought he'd scored a miracle goal until Keelan went behind the goal to retrieve the ball for the goal kick.

Got handed a written warning at work for going awol on the day of the replay. That went up to a final warning the following season, having done similar with a midweek league game at Plymouth, and I wasn't even halfway through my apprenticeship then.

Think Graham Paddon scored for Norwich but could be wrong.

The home defeat by Crewe, Stan Bowles ran riot against that night. Hew as transferred to Carlisle the following season, and then QPR, the year after. He won 5 England caps while at Loftus Road.

One of the game's great entertainers in the 70s, alongside the likes of Tony Currie, Frank Worthington, Peter Osgood. All had flair, flamoboyance, and the crowds flocked to see them play. They only got 34 caps between them though (Currie winning
half of them) That's one less than the total number of England caps Adam Lallana has won.....
