Can I throw a hand grenade into this conservation?

How does the MOBO awards get past rasicm laws? It stands for music of black origin. What would happen if I started one for music of white origin?

The point I am making is that racism laws seem to be one way.

My understanding was that the MOBOs were set-up due to the prevalence of (predominantly) white guitar led indie music in the early to mid 90s. Most of the non-grunge/shoegaze/indie/Britpop artists releasing music in that period were either US rap or slushy US R&B. Record labels still mainly controlled the charts at that point, so it was very difficult for any UK hip-hop, rap or R&B to break through and enjoy commercial success.

Nearly twenty-five years on, I think the title and actual purpose of the event is clumsy (and pointless) but it was never established to be an exclusively black awards event (indeed, two of the first three ‘best album’ winners were ‘white’).

I’d be more worried about Mick Hucknall winning the honorary MOBO prize in 1997 rather than any perceived discrimination against me a white male.

For further context, we were only a couple of year’s on from football fans chucking Chiquitas at black footballers, the Stephen Lawrence murder, and the creation of the awards coincided with the acquittal of the same murdering b@stards in the private prosecution in 1996.  

If you were young and black in the early to mid 90s, it is no surprise that you felt let down by the system.

I'm amazed there is still a Black Police Officers Association.

There would be one hell of an uproar if there was a White Police Officers Association.
