I did not realise the players are still on a 25%cut in their wages I understood it was only when they were not in for training on the first lockdown.I
If that is true I am not surprised they are only going through the motions and giving us the idea they can not be bothered.
Be honest how many of you would give 100% at work if you got docked 25% of your wages every week ?

We've got a trophy manager and a chance to progress their career. Everyone in football is playing for their next contract.

Its called professionalism. At 75% it's still a very good wage compared with the hardships of people heavily affected by the situation at the moment.

Bit difficult when most of the jobs are taken.

I didn't realise that. At this level and the short careers many will be in and no doubt some will be released after 1 or 2 years deals I feel for them. Hence imagine that was your son playing at this level in these times is a tough ask for any player. I prefer my own child if he wasn't nothing special to get himself a proper job Pete and do this on the side. I know there was one player that was a plumber for one playing at conference level and clubs kept asking him to go full time. He wasnt having none of it and preferred the job security of his plumbing job and picking up part time semi professional wages as extra.

Completely agree on both points. There are loads of part-timers who are better than their full-time colleagues but it isn't worth their while giving up a decent day job.

If it was that or no wages at all then I imagine most sensible people would. Lets face it how many of the dross weve got are going to even find other clubs never mind clubs that will pay them 75% of a Div 4 club rate

Grimsby Town Chairman Philip Day has praised the “amazing response” from players after they agreed to take a 25% wage cut.
He said that they appreciated that due to current circumstances, “action had to be taken”.
Other significant changes have occurred, such as training schedules, and games being played behind closed doors.
The club has said that any reverse of this decision will trigger them to review the pay situation.
Grimsby Town players have agreed to the 25% drop in salary for as long as it takes for football games to resume.
Management and boss Ian Holloway have also taken a pay cut.
Philip Day explained the situation:
“It has been accepted and we are absolutely delighted with the support we are getting for the club from the players.
“We are delighted, but not surprised – they appreciated the situation and that action had to be taken to ensure that the club comes through this situation.
“It has been an amazing response from the players. They have agreed to take a 25 per cent reduction.
“If football starts again, or training starts, it will have to be reviewed.
“It shows a commitment by the players to the football club, which is really heartening.”
“There was a request for information from the players that we were happy to supply.
“We had prepared a budget on the basis that we are not playing – because we don’t know when we will be playing again.
“We shared with the players the information from that budget to show them that we had to take some action to get through the situation.”
“Approximately 65 per cent of our income comes from season tickets, tickets sold on matchdays and related commercial activity such as bars, restaurants and the club shop.
“The other 35 per cent is from the EFL and Premier League solidarity payments.
“So as soon as playing ceased, we were down 65 per cent on our income.
“If you look at our accounts, you will see that 77 per cent of our outgoings is from paying players and staff, plus national insurance and pension contributions.
“If you’ve lost 65 per cent of your income, and 77 per cent of your outgoings goes on wages, you’ve got a problem.”
So the question is has it been reviewed?

Day said they were back on 100% but staff on 75%. Part of the wrangle over AL's dispute and furlough.

They'll still have jobs for the duration of their contract though. It's not a case of a 25% wage cut or no job. If the club wants them out they'll pay them off. Granted you could see some respond differently and go all out to put themselves in the shop window. But this all sounds like it's been handled badly going by Holloway's rambling interview the other day, then the announcement about furlough (in a situation when furlough doesn't really apply). Let's not forget Town recruited all these people so if there's too many who is to blame? It's got all the hallmarks of a major shitshow.

Yes. On another note those that do make a successful career of it in the lower leagues especially at one club arent many. I know from our club there was John McDermott and there are others but they are the exception rather the norm. Its a shame that the money isnt better though as this club has such a rich history and was playing what is now premiership football in the 1940s.Long time ago I know but just shows how far we have fallen from grace. Ultimately though money is everything and if your putting your wife and family at risk I think thats what's most important .I understand players are following a dream and who Iam to knock them but hope they have something to fall back on if football doesn't work out. Some players dont bother while they are playing and once retired/injured/released are left in the lurch.

Holloway made it clear pre-season he was struggling to get the players in he wanted because they had to sign some kind of COVID contract, I remember listening to his voice of despair thinking we are in a relegation battle.

I know 11 old age pensioners who would play part time for Town AND do a better job.

I did. The point is you were implying that the players were lucky to have had a 25% pay cut because there are people worse off. By that sort of argument you could say that every person on the breadline in this country is lucky because there are people starving to death and getting bombed in Yemen.

Don't think it even lasted that long. The PFA got their mitts on the players and shook things up.
