I have nothing against Hanson as a man or a player. I wish him well. But we cannot afford to have a player in the squad who can't stay fit for more than a week and a half. I have no data but it feels like he's been injured for 3/4 of the time he's been here.

Shame about Scannell, bad timing as he finally started to show his worth.

Williams was good when he came on against Colchester - time for him to have a go out on the left?

Looking at his Wiki he’s played 33 times since June 2019 (which is more than I expected) he’s also allegedly scored 9 times for us - 5 of which were in August 19.

Thanks, so I'm not being fair to him but with reference to you and Abdul he's started around 50% of games.

That’s how I view it. I thought he’d scored a lot more but it appears apart from a purple patch in August (lets say 5 in 6) he’s scored 4 in 24.

So starts 50% of games and has a strike rate of just under a goal every 3 games. And is one of our higher paid players.

It's a shame about Scannell because when he's fit i think he'll be a real asset in this league, sadly it could be that keeping him fit is going to be difficult. Perhaps that's why we picked him up late on, because of his injury record other clubs left him alone.

It's a blow to be sure, Scannel I mean.

It don't sound to good for Hanson, continually breaking down like this, you have to say it appears unlikely we're going to see much of him for the remainder of his contract. Shame.

Is it a shame? Wouldn't be if he can be replaced with someone who can remain fit and score more than a goal every 6 games - even if he was replaced by someone who could remain fit and scored at the same rate we'd get 4 more goals than if Hanson stays (1 goal every 6 games in a 46 game season).

Is this thread about Scannell or Hanson? Not so bothered about Hanson as he hasn’t contributed for some time but Scannell has really shown what his input could be to the team the last couple of games. Just as we have a player showing his worth, he gets injured. I’m gutted really and just sums up the season......

My dad saw Hanson in tesco petrol station last week. He asked him how's he doing and when he likely to be back. His reply was I don't think I will be back! Make of it what you will.

i am 99.9% confident that didnt happen.

Although i have been saying since the end of last season i didnt think we would see Hanson this year, admittedly i thought that was because he may have moved on by now.

Whether its just old father time catching up with him , the whole covid situation, the disruption to training and pathetic approach to pre season we took maybe even the Covid clauses themselves it looks like a season too far for him at the moment. Would be a real shame if so when we need him fit far more than ever now.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

I accept that but his fitness record since returning from his loan at Boston United is very poor and he’s been unavailable for a lot of our matches and he never seems to have a continuous run of matches in the team, very frustrating.

Is it him or the clubs approach to fitness and recovery?

Agreed he wins a lot of free kicks.

However i think his injuries are muscle injuries aren't they, rather than impact injuries or injuries caused by tackles.

Wright’s catalogue of injuries are more worrying than Hanson’s. One thought may have been to beef him up with greater lower body strength to take the knocks. This was the Liverpool way with Owen if I remember correctly. The trouble is that this brings its own risks to muscles and joints that are not used to that kind of pressure and that seems to be what is affecting him at the moment, more than knocks in games.

Ha, yes he has. I'm not questioning Max's ability and certainly not comparing him as a player to Hanson.

It's Max's struggle with injuries which is the concern. And obviously a massive shame to Max himself who must be devastated that he keeps breaking down.

Is Max still developing? I had a lot of muscle injuries when I was late teens/early 20's. Played a lot of football and also was into long distance cycling, which built my calves too quickly and I suffered before it settled down as I aged. Had problems with shin splints too.

I have some sympathy for this p-o-v, but I think behind this lies the reality of what we have to do to attract players.

I'm pretty sure Hanson and Green only signed because we offered a 2 year deal.  This was a massive risk in Hanson's case, and Green was already on a downward curve in performance levels due to his stage of career.  Both, really only merited 1 year deals.

Bottom line, you might take a punt on one or two players with a poor injury history - but to have 5 or 6 in your squad in the same season is a massive risk.  The almost inevitable outcome is inconsistent availability through the year, maybe one or two that work out and a couple of duds - and those on long contracts essentially drain the budget and eat up squad places.    In recent times, just off the top of my head, you could name John Welsh, Jordan Cook, Charles Vernam and Sean Scannell as similar.

Whether it's our unattractive location, or unattractive recent history, or a cap on the maximum we're willing to pay - it means we're taking too many risks to secure the players of the calibre we need.  There's no real saving in giving someone a 2 year deal at a lower rate if they aren't ever available to play.

Apparently, back in Buckley's day we had a reputation of paying well - small squad, but good footballers - most of whom didn't arrive with baggage in terms of long term injuries.

Maybe Olly's scouting of young players is part of a change in strategy, one that can't be fully put into place until players like James Hanson have moved on and freed up budget.  I hope so, the recruitment approach of recent years has failed miserably.

I was the same. The problems always seemed to have settled down or went away when I was too knackered to run anymore.
