Well we can't hang around with the window round the corner, we're in trouble.

Who would you go for ?

Graham Alexander would be a good shout for me if he would come here.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

Who’s going to appoint the next manager is more the question I’d like to know.

Baldrick ! The only impression you can do is that of a man with no talent !!

Derek Adams of Morecambe.
He’s taken on a pile of sh*t with no money and now in playoffs and is used to living in the back of beyond as he used to live in Dingwall in the Highlands of Scotland

As good a manager as Derek Adams is, you'd have to be mental to give up gainful employment to come and work for us in the shape we're currently in. I suspect Ian Holloway may well join the long list of managers to have left the club never to manage in the football league ever again.

Paul Groves, sacked in 2005, is the last manager to have left the club without joining another club (a la Slade and Hurst) who has gone on to manage again in the EFL, and even then it was a very short stint in the middle of an Eddie Howe sandwich at Bournemouth. That's absolutely scandalous, we are a graveyard for managerial careers.

I'm increasingly of the school of thought that this says more about those running the club than the managers themselves, however.

i suspect we're looking at a prolonged Davies caretakership

I wouldn't say no to Hurst, as tedious as his teams were to watch at times

Edit: I didn't realise Paul cook was still out of work.

Anyone says Hurst again

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Thought Salford were cynical, Alexander moaning and his style was boring. Remind me why Hurst left and he's not done that well in his recent times. Perhaps Ben Davies should have a chance. What about Jermaine Defoe as player/manager?

Doesn't matter who we get, its pure luck if they succeed, doubt they will have enough time to make assured signings, and know who they need to offload, most will have been sacked for failure before, doubt we will make a permanent appt so any 'names' will give a wide birth until a takeover is complete.

Can appreciate people want a new manager in ASAP to sort the mess that Bottle-Job Holloway left, but isn’t this merry-go-round all part of the problem? His chair’s still warm.

I’d sooner wait a bit longer and maybe go through a proper recruitment process rather than, say, having a board member sit down chatting wham over a plate of fish & chips with a mate of his.

Personally I wouldn’t want a permanent appointment made until Fenty is gone completely. Everything he touches turns to shite, he is poison and we need a clean break. Having him involved in any decisions going forward would be pointless.

Agree with the principle completely but the window opens in 9 days and presumably anything in the pipeline is now doubtful. We nees this takeover to happen quickly or we could be in a horrible period of stagnation and cost cutting.

Looking at that list if Sol Campbell got the job it would be the first club he has managed that paid him .

I rather have Alexander or the Cowleys.

The problem then lies with expecting a manager to be able to come in, assess the squad properly, get people out then in, then manage the rest of the season.

First things first - Fenty out.

You expect me to answer that? I've already accumulated more Red Xs than anyone else on this board

Not my job to select a manager anyway but whoever we get (unless we appoint another total new boy like Jolley which please God we won't) will be out of a job because he has been sacked elsewhere, we're not likely to get anyone who is any good and gives up a nice number to come to BP.

So long as its not Sol Campbell I don't really give a excrement TBH, its who is going to appoint the new man that worries me most, there is no one on the current board or the mob rumoured to be coming in who knows anything about football.

Be better taking a Fishy poll and letting us choose him

This is a bigger concern for me at the moment and add that to who will actually appoint the new manager? I just hope the negotiations (aka fannying about) does not cost us our league status.

I haven't got a scooby who I'd like to see but would prefer a pragmatist as idealism is not going to save us.

Take your pick, John Fenty? Shutes? The tea lady? (she probably has as much idea as the first two) A manager who is in the job for 24 hours? A manager appointed by 1420 this afternoon?

Whoever is put in charge of the January window just cannot afford to intercourse it up. Someone who is already at the club is probably the only option (if we must go down the line of signings) so Moore and Davies look like the only two with the inside knowledge TBH

If we were playing this on a computer game it would be Adkins for me. As this is another real life GTFC f*ck up I'd imagine we'll end up with another gamble.

I'm a bit worried that Holloway going public might put a few half decent candidates off.

This, give Davies, Dave Moore, and input from Morais (who is doing his coaching I think?) a chance for the next month until ownership is clear.

What do you base that upon mate? Though if Dave was involved I'd be 100% sure things would be a lot less complicated.

I think he';s based it on being the only sensible option if we are to avoid appointing another loser by acting in haste.

Not by everybody they weren't, only the rose tinted spectacled lot and those wanting to believe anything as they were so desperate for success

Both appointments were heralded as the greatest things ever when it was clear to anyone they weren't

One with no experience whatsoever and one clearly over the hill and living in the past

Not being funny Swin but those who criticised those appointments have criticised every other appointment as well. Hardly showed astute footballing knowledge, more a the approach taken by the posters to everything GTFC.

I’d be interested, what was your reaction to the Hurst/Scott appointment?

Totally open minded as I'd never heard of either of them but given that we were in the Conference and they were managing a non-league club anyway I didn't criticise the appointment.

I didn't mind Hust as we won more than we lost and getting back into the FL wasn't the be all and end all for me, (as a bloke I quite liked him until the ear cupping episode)

The last managerial appointment that excited me and that I totally approved of was Newell so perhpas that explains my reticence to endorse any of them since!

Need to get someone in swiftly who can navigate January, because we need to sign 3 or 4 quality players to keep us up.

Loads of nonsense names about, we need someone steady. Seen Curtis Woodhouse mentioned on Twitter, what the intercourse are people on?

Not my job to select a manager anyway but whoever we get (unless we appoint another total new boy like Jolley which please God we won't) will be out of a job because he has been sacked elsewhere, we're not likely to get anyone who is any good and gives up a nice number to come to BP.

So long as its not Sol Campbell I don't really give a excrement TBH, its who is going to appoint the new man that worries me most, there is no one on the current board or the mob rumoured to be coming in who knows anything about football.

I used to be all for up and coming managers but I am afraid this time we need someone who can come in and hit the ground running, been there has got the t-shirt.

It’s all academic really though. I don’t want these jokers having anything more to do with this club, let alone appointing someone. And who in their right mind would come here with all the off field chaos.

I like Nigel Adkins but no chance of that.

Paul Hurst, Graham Alexander stand out, possibly Phil Parkinson very experienced did a great job at Bradford, reasonably well at Bolton with the financial mess they where in at the time, style of play might not be great but he seems to get teams well organized.

I would take the Cowley's but I'm sure they have set their sights a bit higher than the bottom end of League Two.

Derek Adams of Morecambe.
He’s taken on a pile of sh*t with no money and now in playoffs and is used to living in the back of beyond as he used to live in Dingwall in the Highlands of Scotland

I was going to mention about Derek Adams in the run up to the Morecambe game and say what a great job he is doing at Morecambe, another club out on a limb and potless.

Jolley came with us in a very similar position and turned things around quite quickly with not that many new additions.

The question is, are we after an interim manager between now and the end of the season (who can keep us up and then be on their way) or a long-term appointment?

If the latter...Please not Hurst. Nothing against him but it smacks of a lack of imagination. I can see him turning us down anyway because of the fans being "spoilt".

The Cowley's play a dour brand of football and were found out at Huddersfield but admittedly did wonders lower down the pyramid at Lincoln. I'm undecided but as others have pointed out they're probably waiting for a bigger and better offer. That said they've been out of the game for a while so need to put themselves in the shop window.

But the key to success, Chelsea aside, is consistency. We need a manager who wants to manage GTFC, is proud to manage GTFC and won't jump ship as soon as another club looks sidewise at him/them. I appreciate managers come and go but we're fast becoming a basket case of a club with our high turnover of managers. It'll end up being the poisoned chalice no one wants.

For that reason I can't get excited by Campbell as a long term appointment either.

As for Adkins - we've been down this road before and it ended in nought. Maybe the end of Fenty's tenure will open up new possibilities but who knows?

Lots of questions and no answers but only the board (current or incoming) will truly know how appealing a proposition the role of manager at GTFC is.

I just hope we get it right this time and have a safe pair of hands (interim or otherwise) in place asap so they have a few days, at least, to plan ahead for the January transfer window, which is approaching faster than a speeding juggernaut down a quiet country lane.

One thing I can't be criticised for is fence sitting. I said both Jolley and Holloway were mistakes from the day they were appointed (I also welcomed the appointment of Newell and Slade II but I tend not to boast about that)

If you mean I didn't go overboard with all the 'in (insert new manager's name here) we trust' shite that appears every time we get a new manager then I plead guilty

I doubt they would come here, and it would be contraversial for some, but the Cowley Brothers are proven at this level.

They got absolutely panned on here when they were at Lincoln! They were tipped to go to the top but even Huddersfield was too much of a step up. They'd only come here if they were offered big money (not likely to happen) and they would also want the boardroom (where the real problems are) sorted out.

Graham Alexander's winning percentages are better than decent, and getting better:

CLUB
Fleetwood Town  (2012 - 2015)        145 games   38.6%
Scunthorpe United (2016 - 2018 )  113 games    46.9%
Salford City (2018 - 2020)                112 games    48.2%

Would be a solid choice. Very much doubt we'd see the Cowleys or Paul Hurst here (but I said the same about Holloway).

Good question   , I get January being important, but who realistically might we sign who’ll be a “hairs on the back of your neck” addition?, and outside the official window we can sign “free agents” (and there will be a few decent ones of those I’m sure)
So, I feel not acting in haste, and allowing those with at least some knowledge of the squad should take the reigns at least in the short term until we see what happens re the takeover

There is no right or wrong answer, but this is my current best proposal

Alexander a good choice IMO
Very harshly sacked at both Scunny and Salford
Former had two successive play off places - but obvs not goo enough for such a massive club
Later - they were 5th I think when he went; unbeaten or lost just once?
WTF!

So he has no real negatives in terms of his record - which is steadily getting better (see separate post)

Not very pretty footy - but 95% of L2 teams play functional footy

If budget bigger - who knows, but suspect it will be - aim higher

Lee if we fail to sign anybody mate we’re going down so other than dusting my boots off there has to be someone within the club who is capable of getting those players in that we badly need. I was thinking about your playing career when you suggested money needed spending on the pitch on another thread, a player of your quality would appreciate that, whereas my “style” of defending for Middle Rasen and others was more suited to a mud bath environment

Dusting your boots off could be an option, as you are probably still quicker than Matty Pollock and Luke Waterfall   (though I still rate them both)

GT have just stated that Hurst is the favourite, and that he has been contacted by the potential new owners of the club  Hurst apparently said it was inapropiate

Is Holloway still on the board? could he help decide the new manager?

The favourites stories are always bollox
Mate of mine worked for Match
He said as soon as a manager got sacked they went straight to the last few people to be sacked - and they were installed as faves
Desperate to keep the story moving and alive

EG: Allardyce was always been touted here and there past 12 months until WBA came along

Having said that I would expect Hurst and Alexander to be in the frame

Phil Brown will get a nod soon - and then Adkins

May just be me but I think it’s a badly put together article and it’s Holloway they are quoting not hurst, although it does read like that.

people who think Hurst wouldnt be an appointment for the long term obviously have short memories as after getting us promoted wasnt we in and around the playoff picture before he went Shrewsbury and saved them from league one relegation before turning them into playoff contenders? A manager that can keep clubs up in league 2, challenge for promotion in league 2, keep clubs safe in league 1 and challenge for promotion in 1? sounds just like the kind of person we want for a long term project.

If we don't get credible new owners, I dread to think of the quality of applicants. Imagine walking into this s**t storm?

Until we get Fenty out it’s almost irrelevant. Whoever comes in is almost bound to fail. The most we can hope for is avoiding relegation this season. And then we’ll be back in the same boat in Autumn 2021.

Agree. No one in their right mind would come in now with the possibility of everything changing again very soon. I think there are only 2 options:

1- Moore and co take over for the short-medium term whilst everything else gets sorted.

2- Fenty continues as he is and as a result no half decent manager comes anywhere near and we end up with a hopeless manager in the mold of Nicky Law. If you were Alexander, Atkins etc. why come and work for a man hated by 99.9% fans? It would be career suicide. Yet another masterclass by our saviour who if he was in any other type of role/business would have lost his job years ago for pure incompetence.

Hard to summon the slightest enthusiasm for who the new manager is. This morning everything looked so much better. Things are moving so quickly there has to be another development in the next few days. The club cannot continue in its current form as large sections of the support just won't allow it to.

Listening to Day it seems it will be Davies/Moore for the foreseeable, but there are probably some desperate has beens wanting any job going who won’t care what’s going on.

Rob I admire your optimism but I don’t think Fenty wants to sell to anyone. I think his ego and his greed for power overshadows what is good for the club. I’d almost go as far as to say that he’s of the opinion that if we bring him down he’ll bring the club down with him. I supported Fenty in the past but not now I’m afraid.

All things equal, Alexander would be a perfect fit for us I think. Whether he'd want to come to this basketcase of a club right now is another matter entirely but a pay day is a pay day and he isn't getting one at the minute.

Well we can't hang around with the window round the corner, we're in trouble.

Who would you go for ?

Graham Alexander would be a good shout for me if he would come here.

It's a big 'if' who would wanna come to manage Town?  The club is toxic.

Not by everybody they weren't, only the rose tinted spectacled lot and those wanting to believe anything as they were so desperate for success

Both appointments were heralded as the greatest things ever when it was clear to anyone they weren't

One with no experience whatsoever and one clearly over the hill and living in the past

ROse-tinted spectacles.  What a cliche.  What do you expect fans to do when a manager is appointed?  Immediately slag him off?  What's the point in supporting a club if all you want to do is bring them down?  Why don't you put your name forward?

Not the Cowleys.

I remember reading a while ago whilst at Lincoln one of them was teaching their daughter to say "We hate Grimsby"
So they can urine off.

And everything you read online is true. He might have said it as a joke or something but who would waste time with their daughter talking about us?

To be honest I don’t think it would matter if Kevin Clifton took over. And he’s a Sladypart.

I think we were in 4th or 5th place when Hurst left.  Why would he come back.  The fans were slagging him off.  Do fans of other clubs slag the manager off when their team is at the right end of the table?
