He is (apparently) playing in a front 3 when intact he's on his own. Not making excuses for him because he's just a nothing player but do feel sorry for him trying to do everything himself.
|
| In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions. Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them. GOD |

I know I will get a load of red crosses but I would stick Pollock up front because we can't do any worse..

He might at least secure the ball higher up the pitch for others to then play around him

Complete mystery how he gets so many starts. If Gibson had learned sooner how to stay onside he might have kept his place but Ollie lost patience. Green is the reflex action for managers under pressure. Trains well, clean living, experienced, cheery and avoids injury. His inclusion is a measure of how stunned the coaching staff were by Ollie's recruits. His main skills are to make one or two channel runs to win throws and corners, get noticed , then put on a show of just not quite getting there, thus not risking injury. No real passion for the team, only extending his career. Can't remember one time he dropped his shoulder and drove hard into the box. A raw Gibson was twice the player today.

It's about opinions people can't have any on here, all I'm saying is Green did run the channel in the 1st half, but no one else was in box. Green can't be blamed for Hewitt's poor clearence no one also told Hewitt he had time, and there shot deflected of Waterfall. Bennett's crosses where garbage 1st half, Morais crosses and corners where awful, only Williams can cross a decent ball. Tilley wasn't great either. Teams attack Preston's side of the pitch which also lead to poor clearence by Hewitt. Gibson is garbage, he can't finish always offside he should of knocked his header down to Morais. I'm not saying Greet is fantastic I said in my opinion he did okay, he his coming to the end and Grimsby was his last big contract before he heads to non-league with Hanson. There is problems all over not just Green.

i have a friend who was a pro for many years. there's a term he used, which i can't remember, to describe players like Green. They pretend that their busy, they make it look like they're doing things and trying hard, but it's illusory and their team mates know it's illusory

Did you watch todays game? Gibson was the best player on the pitch second half. I'd love to see him with confidence, when a few goals have gone in for him. Sadly agree about Green, worked harder the last 2 games but hasn't offered enough to stay, never mind start.

I agree the jury is out on whether he can keep improving and score a good number of goals when confident and then consistently, but he was excellent today. I agree he could have done better with the last shot of the game, plus I'd like to see the header again. But to have any confidence at all in this team, and given the supply, is impressive. I find it so frustrating that people make up their mind so early on players and cannot see when they played well. I challenge anyone who doesn't think Gibson might make it to watch the second half again, and note the contribution of Gibson each time he has the ball. As I say, whether he can continue to improve, and add goals, time will tell, but I'd be gutted if he isn't given time.

Green is just going through the motions and has been for 18 months. He half jumps for headers, half chases the ball down, but never does either with any real drive or determination and quite frankly he might as well not bother. Whilst Gibson is very raw and is forever offside, at least he gives it a go, which is far more than Green offers.

i think that gibson's effort and how he improved things shows what we might expect from a Hurst January signing, except that the new man will have more ability and experience.and that will make a big difference to us
i hope that makes sense

Gibson like Jackson Jr is a young lad learning his trade. His touch and control are fantastic, he will be a good player just another that needs time. We need a couple of experianced front men i to help them and the team get out of this mess we are in.

What possessed Jolley to give a 2 year deal to a 32 year old who'd scored 4 in 21 National League games? He's managed 1 in his last 38 league games - I'm sure he's a lovely bloke and all that, but he has to go.

I was impressed with Gibson's general play early in the season but for some reason when he gets in on goal his final effort has been lacking. There's enough there though that I think with good and extensive coaching he can make the standard. One for next season I think.
Jackson I've not yet seen enough of but again I'd give him the benefit of the doubt and say deserves a shot just not now while we're in a relegation slog.
Two new strikers definitely needed one massive lump to hold it up and one fox in the box.

I don’t agree with the character assassination of Green. It was clear from the day he signed that he was a player who needed his team to play a certain way and give him support. He seemed to do quite well with Vernam for instance. But he is not a back to goal player and never will be. It’s unfair to criticise -him for not doing something that he simply cannot do. The manager who signed him should have known.

Agree. He doesn’t provide what this team needs and the players we have don’t work with him - he can finish well (Chelsea) but our current sad state is not his fault. He could probably do a job in the conference playing off a big lump.

Even when playing alongside Hanson he flattered to deceive. One of the few times they gelled was at Walsall last year when Green crossed for Hanson to score. You are correct about him not being a back to goal player but he doesn't have the engine to constantly move into space for midfield passers either so he rations his game. And yes the manager should have known.

Just my opinion but, while it's absolutely true that Green hasn't cut it for quite a while and I'm certain he needs to be leaving soon, I don't think it's fair or necessary to have a thread just about his shortcomings. Mistakes costing goals are happening all over the pitch and its not just him missing chances Our problems are much deeper than just blaming Matt, and making barmy statements like "if he stays we're relegated" . My mates and I were only saying today when was the last time we had a player who could regularly make defence splitting forward passes to any of our miss hitting forwards instead of the usual long ball to chase down or total over elaboration. We are seriously lacking creativity, hopefully Scannels return will help that.

Green is the lower league equivalent of Michael Owen.
In both cases it wasn’t obvious how important pace was to their game until they lost it.
