Unbelievable that he can manage to play in a game at that level without food or fluids over the last 15 hours!

Absolutely brilliant that he sticks to his Muslim beliefs. I just wish that many so Christians would do the same.

It seems a little strange that Fofana (salary £50,000 pw) follows the fasting rules so strictly, yet plays football during Ramadan for ‘money and prizes’, which is considered kafir.

That’s before you factor in that Leicester City is owned by a Thai family who made their money from peddling fags and alcohol. Thailand of course being on the human rights watch for their treatment of (and the disappearance of) many in the minority Muslim community.

No problem with people following their religious beliefs but there does appear to be a lack of consistency.

I’ve captained Kelechi Iheanacho (a Christian) in my Fantasy team this week so hopefully he parts the red (and white) sea in the second half.

I will never understand why people have ‘religious beliefs’ in the 21st century. I’ll not elaborate TOO much on this as incredibly I still seem to be in the minority compared to society overall, but I actually have faith in my Grimsby brethren and believe I’m in the majority around these parts. But if I’m not, so be it, no drama.

Not wanting to derail this thread, but if Christians lived by biblical rules they'd all be imprisoned within hours.

Didn’t Mo Salah and Sadio Mane and other Liverpool muslim players find a way around the Ramadan rules to play the 2019 Champions League semi final at home to Barca fully fueled (might be a different game but seem to think it was a biggie)?

Getting deep into non-footy territory, but you fundamentally misunderstand the basis of Christianity if you think it's about following rules. The core belief is that it's impossible to follow the rules, but Jesus of Nazareth already did on behalf of those who put their faith in him.

(I won't post any more about it here. Theology belongs in non-footy).

I remember seeing a tv programme  on the police and they covered this  Muslim policeman during Ramadan. Struggled when he was chasing a criminal due to the lack of energy in his body.

Credit to him though for sticking to his beliefs. Seemed a nice man and was a credit to the force.

The notion that you need fuel to be able to function is nonsense. The human body actually becomes more attuned and sharp when it hasn't had food for a while. It's how we survived as a species. Before shops, when we were hunter gatherers, if there was nothing to eat for a period of time, we needed to have the energy to go out and find some, otherwise we would have perished. Tracking an animal for miles on an empty stomach was quite common and successful hunts were the exception, rather than the norm.

There is a lot of evidence to suggest that we actually perform better physically and mentally in a fasting state and many people are now challenging the notion that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

Of course, we have to eat eventually and we also need to drink water, but going without food during daylight hours is easily done. Intermittent fasting, I believe, is beneficial, and something I have practiced myself.

Interesting post Ginny.

I read something similar in Bill Clinton's autobiography. A doctor told him that as we get older we should eat less due to the energy combustion process that wears down our body. This apparently helps life expectancy.  Iam not sure how true this is though. Personally I think balance is key. Eat right, drink plenty of water and exercise and try to be calm in mind and body as stress can be a killer. Easier said than done sometimes I know.

Got any tips because I can't go more than two hours without some pringles or a rocky robin.

The science says that if the body is not busy digesting food, it goes into repair and regeneration mode, killing dead cells and replacing them with new ones.

Yeah right. You do realise that this is the Grimsby Town message board 😉😰😣😖😓😥😫😩.

The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

She said 'Well you already know how to play football'

Aye that's a great post Ginny and backs up a lot of how I approach it.

Fasting is something the body was designed to do.  You look at the top endurance athletes now and the vast majority of them train in a fasted state, often up to 16 hours.

The simplest explanation I can think of is that we eat an evening meal, then sleep.  Whilst sleeping our bodies are at their lowest demand.  We're spending as little energy (fuel/food) as possible during this.  We then wake up and still have a surplus of fuel/food in our bodies, yet we then eat breakfast and just put more fuel into our system for our body to burn through.

Fasting is horrible at first, it throws your body well out of sync as it's not used to it.  But after a while it genuinely becomes normal and the idea of eating breakfast has no appeal at all.   The human body is very adaptable and quickly settles into a new routine.

I suppose the difference is me as a bang average (at best) amateur athlete doing routine training as opposed to a high-performing elite athlete performing at the highest level in a competitive manner.  I'd guess the science transfers though, maybe just needs tweaking to suit needs.
