I don't think he would have recommended Grimsby to another ex Newport striker if he had any intentions of returning

Or alternatively, Amond would recommend said striker If he thought they could have a prolific partnership together! Sorry, I’m just being mischievous. I don’t think there is any chance of him returning.

Amond is surplus to requirements there wasn’t getting in the first team a great deal towards the end of the season. He’s definitely up for grabs.

For as much I absolutely adored Amond and hated JSF for renaging his offer I'm not sure what's he got left in the tank. Watched him intently in the PO final and he seemed well off the pace and not getting into the positions he used to. All that said, would I welcome him back, absofuckinglutely...

If he came back we could field a front three with a combined age of around 100.😀

If he does become available I wouldn't be surprised if newly promoted Hartlepool don't try and tempt him back.

Why are people so quick to write off players once they get beyond 30? I'm not saying we should sign him, even if he is available, but I'm sure he could still do a job at conference level, even if it was as a squad player to come on if we need a goal in a tight game.

Yeahbut given he is a contracted league player to buy him and then make it worth his while on top by improving his pay or beating the length of his contract would make him an incredibly expensive squad player.

I very much doubt we would have to pay for him despite his contract. I also doubt we would have to offer more money or length of contract. He's on the wane with Newport and I bet they would let him go on a free if we were interested. He'd also have to weigh up how much of a chance he'd have of getting regular games now at league level.
He may be of the opinion that it's time to move on and he knows he would be welcome here, that's if Hurst is interested of course, which is mere speculation at the moment.

Ronaldo is 36, so if he was available and free, would we sign a 36 year old, or would he be too old!

Futcher was too old and too slow.. wasn't he?
If.....Amond by any means came back, if he produced 10 to 15 goals amongst other strikers, then I would take that.
He could also pass on striker tricks to younger strikers coming up.
Would probably be better in front of an appreciative crowd ?

By all accounts Futcher never had pace to lose, his exceptional reading of the game made this irrelevant. Plus he played the bulk of his games in the second tier. Poor comparison IMO.

Do other clubs pine after former players as much as we do? I wonder if Croudson fancies coming back as a number 2 again...

At this level, probably. I’ll readily admit that I know next to fúck all about the pool of players from which we realistically have to select from, so it’s natural that people will speculate about potentially available players that have done well here in the past. I realise it’s a bit boring - I don’t think Amond will be making a return to BP - but I understand why it happens and I’m pretty sure it happens elsewhere too. It will all be different once Stockwoods (sic) and co have us back in the top flight.

Paul Groves was 31 going on 32 when he played every minute of every game in the 1997/98 season.
He was 32 going on 33 when he scored about 15 for us the following season when we were back in what's now the Championship.
Gary Jones had a very decent career with us, including his last when we was 32/33. He had a football brain and I'd put Amond in the same sort of category i.e. right place, right time, good execution.
Again, not expecting us to sign Amond, not sure it's something we should be looking at anyway, but I'm in agreement that being the wrong side of 30 isn't always game over.

Mark Hughes said after the Wales game today that 32 is the new 25 in reference to suggestions that Bale may be considering retiring from international football.
Hughes was almost 38 when he retired.

Comes down to the fact that the average fan has no idea about the sort of player around. Minus one or two from reports or opposition. Therefore we’re always going to want players we rate - they are usually ex players.

It's not unheard of for players, and indeed managers, to go back to former clubs. The two often go hand in hand, ala Pearson, so it's not inconceivable that Amond could end up back here.

From the very first moment I saw Padraig Amond I rated him. Comparing him to Omar Bogle I thought Amond was better overall . Omar was ok techically and the more physical but I felt Amond looked the better technically.
As for resigning for Grimsby Amond could do a job in the conference especially more so if he has looked after himself physically .Haven't seen him play in a while so its hard to properly assess him.

But you never loose quality of which Amond has some. He may be a bit slower but if he can get 20 plus goals and push Grimsby back to league status or be in play off contention this time next year you wont be complaining . Whatever happens though Rancido its not going to be easy for Paul Hurst as players wages will be cut(heard often that from league 2 to conference wages are cut by 25%) and added to that there is less status for Grimsby now being a non league club. Some teams though are lucky. If they have a rich owner in the conference they can pay league wages. Ive heard this for one from someone who has links to Stockport football club and he states there paying big money there eg in excess of £2,000 a week for some players.

I agree with this. Amond was never the sort of athletic player for us who relied on pace and power. Getting in the right place and having the striker’s instinct we’re his main attributes as I saw it.

Remember seeing Amond in a pre season friendly the year he signed, can’t remember who we played against, maybe Peterborough or something? But you could tell straight away he was going to score a truck load, his movement and anticipation was a level above anything we’d seen in years. Proper goal scorer.

Age is becoming less relevant if players are strict with their nutrition, s&c training and are lucky with injuries. Kevin Ellison looks far fitter than Sean Scannell despite being 10 years older.
I’d expect Podge would still be more than good enough but I thought the same about Alan Connell when he came back.

Some players just have that one purple patch season, never to be repeated. I get the impression that Amond is not in that category but he would need to play in a team that compensated for his natural ageing so he is not expected to run his legs off in lost causes..

Except for the season that he played for town, Amond hasn't achieved 20 goals in a season so I would interpret his promotion season with us as "a purple patch".

Podge is a class act, he might be past his prime but he would still score plenty of goals at Conference level. I would love to see him back in a Town shirt.

I think it might be useful to keep in mind that Amond was still preferred to start in the playoff games by the Newport manager to the forward we have actually signed from them. Which is to say that he still has plenty to offer both on and off the field. He could make a huge difference next season if his return is actually on the cards. I would love to see it.

Podge is not getting the game time nor scoring as frequently as in his previous seasons. He is a proven goal scorer, though he was/has never been as prolific as THAT season with us - 30 goals in 40 games. (The lunacy/incompetence surrounding his release still irks) At 33 you would think he's still got at least a couple of years left in him, but for whatever reason strikers can suddenly loose that special instinct that goes with the breed. He has a year left on his contract at Newport so I reckon - if he was interested in coming back - we would have to pay them a fee & offer Podge at least a 2 year deal on what he's on now. At the end of the day - not only does it go dark - but is PH interested in that gamble?

Even if he's only half the player he was, then that's still 16-17 goals.

Any forward that can score 10 or more goals is worth signing as a huge improvement from last season.

Clearly Podge coming back is a far fetched idea, his scoring record means if he was available there would be plenty of offers from EFL clubs.
On Wednesday anyone who’s out of contract stops getting paid so they’ll be lots of activity none of which will involve Amond returning.

I agree with what you post. I think come the end of next week and the week after will bring some interesting signings. Hopefully we might get 2/3 more quality players in.

I think players continue to get paid throughout July by their former club if they are unattached. If we sign someone on 14th July, he's had 2 weeks wages from his old club and that stops once he signs for us.

Now we are having people mentioning Birtles alongside Amond!?!? I think even Amond would be embarrassed!

I can't see Podge being anywhere near as good as Birtles was at centre back, never mind as a centre forward.

Gary Birtles played and won two European cups - Amond scored 30 goals in Conference - hardly fair to mention in the same breath, Massively different class.

That’s your opinion, some things can’t be taught and I believe his instincts of being in the right place at the right time is one of those things, Birtles played at a much higher level granted but I still believe Podge could do a more than good job at the level we are now

As I said earlier Birtles was a class act and I will never forget seeing him in a Town shirt, but the point I was trying to make is don’t right someone of just because of his age.

Birtles and Woodcock were telepathic and with John Robertson as the supplier they were unstoppable in those European games.

Individually, Amond's age shouldn't be an issue.
But with Ryan Taylor (33) and LJL (32) in the squad as strikers, I can't see Hurst going for another 30+ striker on the books.

I love all this Amond talk. But surely it isn't just me that is really skeptical of the idea?
Would rather have the great memories we had before with him.
If it was someone else with his stats for the last 2 years, not 1 person would want him IMO 33Years old 19/20 - 8 goals in 33 apps 20/21 - 6 goals in 44 apps
For context, John-lewis scored 4 in 20 in the worst team in the league, Amond has been playing in a Newport team that finished 5th

How many of those did he start? I suppose it’s minutes on the pitch per goal that counts.

I saw Birtles play twice in Germany in the European Cup. He was excellent (along with Tony Woodcock) when winning at Cologne in the semi final 2nd leg. Cologne were then the current double champions.
I never thought that he would grace BP later with his skills, work rate and goals.

Don't let facts and stats destroy the myth that Amond could repeat his "once in a career season" with us again.

I’m guessing it’s an obscure indirect guess/hint at an ex player returning- without naming whom. Given that two or three have been mentioned it’s a case of ‘I told you so’ when one does without actually telling. 😉

Quoted from 123614
Take Me Home Country Roads - John Denver
Well, homesick, he must be on about Vernam Meaning Behind the Lyrics “Take Me Home” illustrates the feeling of home-sickness. In the first verse, Denver sets the scene of his “almost heaven,” describing the setting of West Virginia and the many natural landmarks it has to offer. In the line “Life is old there, older than the trees,” Denver shows his respect to the land, because seniority is linked to wisdom and often times we look up to our elders for comfort and advice. He then mentions someone( maybe himself) being “ Younger than the mountains, Growin' like a breeze.” Denver might be talking about himself and how he is young and humbled by the mountains he reveres so much. Furthermore, when he returns home, he finds himself growing like a breeze, both literally in age and spirituality. The chorus is very straight-forward. He wants to return to “country roads”: the place where he belongs. In this case it is West Virginia among the blue ridge mountains. However, he mentions a “mountain momma,” which brings back to the importance of the mountains to Denver. In addition, mothers are the symbol of comfort and nurture; Denver refers to the mountains as a momma, in the sense that he finds them as comforting as a mothers touch would to a child. In the beginning of the second verse, he references how all his good memories revolve around a “miner’s lady.” Miners work in mountains, so, again, Denver emphasizes the importance of the mountains to him. The lines “stranger to blue water, Dark and dusty, painted on the sky, Misty taste of moonshine, Teardrops in my eye,” in verse two, describe the hard work that Denver did. However he is nostalgic of the moments of reward in between the hard work where he was able to enjoy a nice country moonshine. The teardrops represent this longing. The whole third verse is about how Denver is regretful that he isn’t back in the place that he loves and is constantly reminded of it. The line “The radio reminds me of my home far away,” may have been written by Bill Danoff, since he used to listen to a radio station that often described the beauty of West Virginia.
