that should rouse the 'Usual Suspects' to spout off - fully expecting Gib Mariner,Old Codger,  Filipe, Yoda, Pen etc etc to be giving us their opinion soon.

PS How long before we get the first mention of Scotch Eggs?

The last two paragraphs of this article were disappointing:

Quoted Text
Grimsby Live asked for clarity on whether the club would receive any sell-on fee for Sirki Dembele's transfer from Peterborough United to Bournemouth.

However, the owners could not disclose that information due to confidentiality.

https://www.grimsbytelegraph.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/grimsby-town-owners-contract-update-6585538

If it transpires we no longer have a sell-on clause for Dembele, Fenty should be told to forget the rest of his loan repayment on the grounds of gross negligence.

Nice to be in such exalted company - if you bother to read my posts, you'll know that I'm not in the 'Hurst out' camp, more frustrated by the lack of a ruthless finisher who might have turned some of these recent losses into more points. We're not far off and I've never said we are.

You'd imagine that if we didn't have a sell on then there wouldn't be anything to disclose because it didn't exist.

Therefore Holmes I do conclude ipso facto that some such clause does exist! Onwards now to conclude other great matters of urgency for our times.

Nothing to worry about here if they were not entitled to a sell on fee and had no interest in the matter how could they be bound by a confidentiality agreement.?

The Peterborough Telegraph ( today Wed)) still talks about “understanding that a sell-on amount is due to Grimsby Town”.

Strangely, they also reported that Dembele was rescued from us”.   Probably true but an odd choice of words.

And that is the seed of doubt planted in my mind. I'm sure Barry Fry would have celebrated and told everyone about that expiring though if it was true.

Back to the article, so is this very similar to the manager getting “ a vote of confidence” from the chairman, as we all know how the majority of those finish.

They sound more like Fenty each week.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

But in a far more eloquent way.

If you want Hurst out you are just ‘noise’. And your opinion has no value.
I absolutely agree that the fans don’t (and rightly so) get to choose if a manager stays or goes. But I read this article as a pop at those who won’t back the club 100% unconditionally.

I’m still 100% happier to have the new owners over Fenty. But the tint on my rose glasses is fading slightly !!

The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

She said 'Well you already know how to play football'

Almost everything they've said since day 1 has been like Fenty but more eloquent. It got ignored because of the elation of having a change.

I'm not against them in any way, I just wish people would be consistent with their opinion. If it was bad when Fenty did it, it's still bad and deserves criticism just as much.

Quite.

I pay ‘unconditionally’ for our season tickets. Within that, I support the club, always have and always will, but that doesn’t relieve me of the right to have an opinion.

I want to hear from the board; but I only want to hear from them when there is something meaningful to say. This feels like speaking for the sake of speaking and the reporter having to publish a story about nothing much.

Examples I want to hear from them about at the appropriate time are:
The new training ground.
When Fenty is/has/will be paid off.
What new investors are coming in.

As it stands, it appears that there wasn't much to talk about other than us losing a lot more than we win so, in my opinion, it's probably a discussion that should have been postponed until there was something meaningful to talk about. I agree with their point that it's their job to filter out the noise but I also think it's not necessarily something that should be said out loud either.

Probably an unpopular opinion but I'm in agreement regards them and hearing from them.

I like both of them, I think they're very eloquent and I have absolutely no doubt that we'll move forward considerably under their tenure.

But I've got a little bit tired of the obsession with getting a soundbite from them all the time. I think that's a reflection of the reaction to them rather than either of them as individuals, or indeed as 1878.  There's not a lot else to say on stuff yet we keep hearing the same messages all the time.

Again, not a criticism of them because they're clearly trying to be as transparent as they possibly can and when someone shoves a microphone in front of you it's going to be difficult to say no and not appear uninterested.

I think the problem here sits more in that people don't want their opinion heard, they want it acted on.

This forum for example has a wide range of views on PH and whether he should or shouldn't be sacked as manager. Those more ferocious in their view he should be sacked will no doubt conclude the board are not acting in the best interests of Grimsby Town because they don't believe that the form is worthy of manger sacking. This is where the critiques about food, glass barriers etc come from.

I can understand their attitude to "noise" judging by some of the comments and suggestions voiced on this site.

The issue is that the new board appear to be much stronger-willed than Fenty, who was a weak, thin-skinned man and the fans knew they could get at him. Time & time again when fans weren’t happy with the manager, they’d give it a few weeks and then start pointing the finger at Fenty. Lo & behold, once he started to come in for some personal criticism, managers would disappear. If attendances were dropping & the balance sheet looking in danger, someone was getting the boot.

I don’t particularly like being referred to as “noise”, but I can see the justification. 1878 clearly have a strategy (that probably doesn’t involve going up this year) and seem intent on sticking with it. They’ve already projected fairly substantial losses for the next few years in the interests of longer term success.

I think that’s always what was missing under the previous shower - anything even resembling long-term thinking, with some ethereal stadium project dangling 5-10 years into the future. It was always fire fighting, patching up and seeing what happened this week. Complete culture change, which is what 1878 have promised from the start.

12 points from the next 5 or he should be sacked imvho. 12 points exactly, no more no less.

It's the seemingly underlying lack of urgency that is starting to get to me. It's never seems to bode well when requests for more time or long term project claims come to the fore in football. I thought JS and AP might have made a larger immediate impact than they have. Hit the ground running, building a larger board of investors, grander infrastructure schemes etc

Happy for the change in ownership, but feeling quite underwhelmed re off the pitch at the minute.. and very underwhelmed re the playing side..

We know (from the accounts) they have bought just over £1.5 million of shares from various people and have further invested £1.125 million on top of that.

So both Stockwood & Pettit have put in around £1.3 million each from their own pockets/children’s inheritance and have pledged to put further funds into the club going forward.

I do think the social media output from the club has been poor. An example of this is the lack of updates on Notts County ticket sales.

Another is the lack of any posts highlighting the cosmetic improvements made to Blundell Park. I think there was something posted about the new glass barrier at the front of the upper but nothing to highlight all the broken/cracked seats have been replaced, the red seats at the back of the Pontoon have been replaced with new black & white ones, the old scoreboard support posts have been removed from in front of the Osmond Stand, the Main Stand roof advertising hoardings that been replaced, new lighting installed in stands etc…

To be politically correct I think they should not be called 'scotch' eggs. They are not made in Scotland or contain scotch. The club should relaunch them as Grimsby eggs. Regarding red or brown sauce, just call them sauces of different flavors. We should not forget that some like mustard (But not called English, French or American), just called mustard.

Also, what about a vegan version? (Anyone know a plant that lays eggs?)

By the way we have a match on Saturday, anyone want to talk about that?

Your not allowed to say that😜😜😜 the protectors will be on your case no matter that you are only reflecting what you see.

I think it should be quite properly asked, as it’s inferred that the circa £1.2 mill is from their own pockets. Are these new monies over and above normal expenditure, and what they have been spent on?

Fenty stated there was 800k in the bank when he left. The accounts seem to bare this out, given the glass screens and irrigation automation was committed to immediately 1878 took over.

A clear Idea of where these monies have been spent would help transparency.

For example, If it’s doing the same to the pitches under repairs renewals as always, it should not be quoted as part of infrastructure improvements. In any-case there is no way the pitches were relaid as stated by 1878. During the recent televised game, pundits highlighted BP was horrendous under the Findus Stand, noting that the ball didn’t bounce.

Nor should spending money on unnecessary payoffs be counted as part of infrastructure expenditure. £1.2 mill is a fortune if spent properly!!! It should be obviously visible  where the monies have gone. 1878 talk about infrastructure investment time and again. When is someone from the media going to do their job and ask proper questions.

What’s been spent, where and why, was it necessary, what difference will it make, and is this because you have turned your back on relocation.

I get it, we are all delighted JSF has gone along with his mates, but that elation should not shroud accountability and transparency IMHO.

First of all, £1.125m is actually circa £1.1m as it's £75k shy of £1.2m.

Due to your mate failing to learn lessons from 2009 and 2010, we find ourselves back in a league which reduces our funding. I know we get help this season, a fair bit less next season and then it disappears in 2024 if we are still here but funding has still been cut. Despite that, I would hazard that our wage bill will show an increase in the next set of accounts for a number of reasons:
 • Most of our players have been recruited from the EFL.
 • Debbie Cook came in as CEO with Ian Fleming sidestepping into the newly created role of COO and then being replaced by Adam Smith.
 • The recruitment of an Analyst, Head Chef, Head Groundsperson (with the existing one being retained as part of the groundstaff) and I'm sure there are more new/additional positions too.

The club entered into a partnership with a company to help the analyst, Cheapside has had a significant facelift and a new Portakabin was purchased to house additional equipment. A fair bit of work has gone into improving BP. The cynics suggest that the £1.125m includes the £500k paid to Fenty but I'm not so sure that is the case myself. Yes £1.125m can go a long way but good quality stuff comes at a price too.

Nice response that is my friend.

Simple, if 1878 give it the transparency and professional investors malarkey, then they should expect to be questioned and show accountability.

By the way how’s Bcorp going. See that was mentioned again by 1878. Questions on that wouldn’t go amiss. Why is it taking so long? and how such an accreditation if achievable, has anything to do with a football club?

Not nasty questions at all, or meant to run 1878 down, just keen to know.

Tin Hat back on 👍👍👍UTM and that’s all I care about.

When they did the glass front of the upper and we were top of the league people were saying how great it is, as soon as we started losing people moaned about spending money on cosmetic stuff and not on the team. Can you imagine if they had been telling people about mending some seats? I just think with certain parts of the fan base it’s not worth putting their head above the pulpit. Let them carry on doing this type of thing behind the scenes, less hassle all round, including having to listen to the moaners on here go on about it.

Dammed if they do, dammed if they don't. They just can't win can they? Some on here want to check all the receipts FFS. If you go to the pub you don't ask to see the accounts before you buy a pint. Just let them get on with it, if you don't want to support them, then fine, it's your prerogative. Just stop trying to be clever and stop telling us all what we should be doing.

Not in defence of Fenty, but no chairman/owner is above scrutiny. There's plenty of Liverpool fans with plenty to say about Fenway Sports, United fans about the Glazers etc. No owner is bomb proof, nor should they be.

As ever in football it is all about results.  Winning and everybody is happy and we can see the need for the glass barrier. Losing and obviously that money should have gone on a player.

Football is such an emotional thing. Fans are completely intertwined with the club and it is therefore very difficult to be objective which I think is what the owners mean by noise.

It is their job to rise above it and be a little bit more detached if possible.

Being a heart rules head type of chap I will be up and down on how things go on the playing side on the management side and on the ownership side just like millions of fans up and down the land.

I am currently optimistic about the weekend and looking forward to it immensely but if it goes badly I will no doubt have a go at something due to frustration.

I wanted the owners to be a bit more guns blazing but equally realise they will have a long term plan so again it's a bit up and down but this is what football is all about on and off the field.

Not my mate mate.

Moving the chairs around on the Titanic is hardly an explanation.

Think you will find most of those positions or things already existed in one guise or another, but thanks for trying.

Would it not be better for transparency, that is all. If you are going to talk the talk, then walk the walk, is a reasonable ask.

The position of Chief Operations Officer was newly created. A Head Groundsperson was recruited but the person that they replaced stayed on in the business. The analyst is someone we haven't had since Slade Mk2. That is just 3 new roles in the business that is probably costing the club £100k.

They can't come out and say the sprinklers cost £38,754.63 because they probably got a few quotes and suddenly the more expensive suppliers have commercially sensitive information. They can't tell us exactly what they are paying the Head Chef because that person doesn't deserve The Fishy scrutinising their wage. They are certainly walking the walk as far as transparency goes; their accounts go above and beyond the requirement of a private limited company and we've publicly disclosed transfer fees for the first time in over 18 years.

But the article only refers to " noise" in a general context and not to any specific person or subject. The actual words are " We have to discern proper information from the noise" and " We understand everyone has an opinion on this, we have to work out what's valid and what is background noise. We're not concerned by that (noise), we can see a path ahead and we will give it time". This post isn't aimed specifically at you Skaface although I have quoted your post. It's just to highlight that some people might interpret the use of "noise" as personally aimed at them when it really isn't. I actually think you make some very valid points and you can see the long term view the new owners have.

Thanks James. Are you always so sensitive!!!!

Don’t think anyone would expect a negotiation to be public, but after the event round numbers can be intimated surely. But in any case you’re a long way short of £1.12 mil. In terms of staffing costs, they will show in the account next year. Did we really need another Groundsman man, an explanation wouldn’t go  a miss, or a CEO/COO for that matter? Just asking!!!!

Aside of that, the concept of infrastructure refers to equipment and systems that are designed to meet the Businesses needs. Do you really think that the staff are infrastructure??  Could be and insulting reference me thinks.

Your not one of these happy clappers are you.

After saying that I’m mad keen for 1878 to be successful after years of disappointment putting the past firmly where it belongs.

Jason said “Andrew and I intend to continue to invest in the infrastructure and playing side of the Club and since the financial year end 1878 Partners has invested a further £1.125m into the business to support these initiatives."

They haven't said that they've spent £1.125m on infrastructure. A good Head Chef supports the playing side of the business, as does an analyst. The pitches are infrastructure and an extra person in that department means that the playing side of the business can train and play on surfaces that are as good as they can be.

Given most of our recruitment has come from the EFL, I imagine a fair chunk of that £1.125m is plugging the funding gap from relegation.

Next time the board invite questions, take the opportunity to ask them. All they ask is that you have the common decency to use your real name and not hide behind a username.

I find it really odd that some fans are so adamant that they want to see everything the new owners have done or are doing, like as if they are the main stake holder / owner and must be in the know.  Did you demand the same from JF?

Stop trying to poke the new owners with the sh*t stick on anything they do, its getting really boring now.

Just accept we are in a better place and would never go under, JF didnt give a crap about GTFC (depsite his claims) anyone who puts in 30K to takes away 1.5 Mill is not looking at GTFC interest but his own.

Just let the new owners get on with it.

Nor did they say they have spent £1.125m on infrastructure and the playing side they said they invested this amount into the business to support these initiatives (post 31 May 21.)Words are chosen carefully in press releases like this,
less so in interviews.
Post 31 May 21 a number of minority shareholders have been bought taken the total amount spent on shares to £1.5 m (well beyond the £975k held by Fenty) and a £500k loan instalment will have been paid to Fenty.
Do you think if they had funded these amounts on top of the amounts mentioned here they would not have mentioned that  additional investment instead choosing to understate what they have spent so far ?

IIt would be reasonable to assume Herve, that that 1.125m figure does include the first 500k tranche payment to JSF. As you point out why would that specifically be excluded.

Not that it matters really, it needed paying and therefore counts as investment to date.

That still leaves a fairly big chunk of change spent on funding various new roles, a range of ground and training ground improvements and other activities related to the business e.g. the new website.

I agree that statements have the opportunity to be scrutinised before release which is an opportunity not afforded to conversations. We don't need to drill down every statement etc but I do think a lot of people think £1m goes a lot further than it actually does. If attendances hold up, the variance has essentially paid the loan repayment.

Anyway, they've put money into the club and invested in some things it was desperate for and a couple of nice to haves. It will be interesting to see what improvements we make this summer and what plans get submitted for the new training ground.

Remember that these accounts relate to last year, most of which was still under Fenty's stewardship. Any money that has been spent/raised this year will show up in next years accounts. So, we will have a better idea of what the new regime are spending and where then.

A fair bit of work has gone into improving BP. The cynics suggest that the £1.125m includes the £500k paid to Fenty but I'm not so sure that is the case myself. Yes £1.125m can go a long way but good quality stuff comes at a price too.

Why does the analyst need help, I thought he should know what he is doing as he came from a Championship club.

Considering our recent run either or both need sacking as they don't appear to be helping much.

If my pint tasted like urine I would tell them that they are doing a crap job.

You do know there is more to being an analyst than sitting in the stand and watching the game right?

He uses software to produce specific clips for individual players and team meetings. Not only is he analysing our performances, he's analysing the opposition and on a Saturday afternoon he can't be at 2 grounds.

Ah, if only the actual real world were as simple and binary as you perceive it to be.

Remember that these accounts relate to last year, most of which was still under Fenty's stewardship. Any money that has been spent/raised this year will show up in next years accounts. So, we will have a better idea of what the new regime are spending and where then.

If they choose to publish the accounts next year that is. They don't have to anymore. Great PR to publish the books when we run at a profit regardless of whether that was down to them or not, will be interesting to see if they do the same this time next year when we've made a loss.

I’m pretty sure that they’ve stated in various interviews that they intend to be transparent with the fans.

Increased attendances above Budget , Dembele sale . No evidence of money splashed on players. Would be very suprised if there isn’t a profit this year regardless of where we finish and  I haven’t forgotten the infrastructure spend.

Well John McAtee went to tribunal: https://www.grimsbytelegraph.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/grimsby-town-scunthorpe-mcatee-tribunal-5981660

Funding is reduced, every penny received in transfer income is straight out of the business and £500k has been paid towards Fenty. Those extra gate receipts cover a good proportion of that Fenty installment.

Unsure which accounting period the sprinklers and glass barrier fall in but without that, we have a few new non-playing staff, a large proportion of our recruitment has come from the league and we've also been paying Montel Gibson, Ira Gibson and Filipe Morais who Hurst put in a separate group. They all left by mutual consent so how much of a good deal we got there I don't know but it's still 3 players we've paid a wage to for periods of this season that weren't ever going to play. Oh and there's Danny Rose who is still on the payroll although Darlington are hopefully paying something towards his wages now.

I'd say the wage bill is probably higher than last season but we will have to see next year.

Loan repayments are not expenses in the profit and loss account.

We will see. The owners have said many times that they expect to make a substantial loss over the next couple of years.

The problem with saying you're going to be transparent is that you can always be more transparent. They've kept up the level of detail in the accounts yet some people are saying it was so easy to do that because these accounts aren't really theirs but at least wait until the accounts aren't detailed to dig that knife in.

Today we had it said on here that the board have stopped the team staying overnight. Well pre-season included a week at a prestigious venue in Cheshire, training videos have been held at various grounds on the way to away games the day before and, in Fentys' last set of accounts team travel and accommodation reduced despite us playing more games!
