I think this deserves a thread on it's own. Here's the amount of points difference between each team's FT & HT results in the National League so far this season...

+17 points - Stockport
+17 points - Solihull
+11 points - Halifax
+10 points - Boreham Wood
+8 points - Wrexham
+8 points - Aldershot
+6 points - Notts Co
+6 points - Bromley
+5 points - Chesterfield
+5 points - Dag & Red
+5 points - Wealdstone
+4 points - Southend
+4 points - Eastleigh
+3 points - Torquay
+1 point - Grimsby
+1 point - Altrincham
= points - Maidenhead
-3 points - Yeovil
-3 points - Woking
-3 points - Barnet
-9 points - King's Lynn
-11 points - Dover

But yeah, we're all obsessed with substitutes at Grimsby....

Out of interest, where are we in the second half league table (i.e. if you treat the second half only as the full result)?

I don't have the data to easily work that out. On Flashscore there's a "table" showing W>W, W>D, W>L, D>W, D>D, D>L, L>W, L>D & L>L which is what I used to work out point change on Excel. To work out what you asked you'd need to know which W>W & L>L games saw the half-time lead increase, stay the same & shrink. And that would involved checking 178 games that were W>W.

Fair enough. It’s a nice bit of Excel wizardry to be fair - good work.

To be honest, I was thinking of a potential counter argument in that the better you do in first halves, the less opportunity there is to improve on your points total in the second. However, that’s flawed slightly by the fact that all four sides above us in the first half table have still gained many more points than us in the second.

Interestingly, Chesterfield, who have had a few notable late capitulations of their own, are four points better off than us, two of which came in that game at BP.

I do think this is bigger than just subs though. My main criticism of Hurst this time and last, is his inability (or unwillingness) to positively influence results and performances through mid-game system changes. This data backs this up very solidly.

That doesn’t mean to say I think he’s a poor tactician - there have been times where we’ve set-up differently and benefitted - the 6-1 win away at Gateshead all those years ago stands out in my mind. But I struggle to think of an occasion where it’s worked during a match.

Here you go...

Solihull - 67 points
----------------------------
Stockport - 66
Halifax - 57
Chesterfield - 56
Notts County - 56
Wrexham - 54
Boreham Wood - 50
----------------------------
Grimsby - 50
Altrincham - 50
Dag & Red - 49
Woking - 46
Torquay - 45
Bromley - 42
Yeovil - 41
Aldershot - 39
Maidenhead - 38
Southend - 37
Eastleigh - 37
Barnet - 36
Wealdstone - 36
----------------------------
King's Lynn - 28
Weymouth - 20
Dover - 19

Out points looks fairly decent HOWEVER... we extended the lead in 7 of the 11 games where we were winning at HT & at FT and drew the 2nd half in the other 4. i.e. extending leads we had rather than turning matches we were drawing or losing around. Of the 21 games we weren't winning at HT we only won 6 (4 when drawing at HT & 2 when losing) and didn't turn any of the other HT deficits into draws.

Summary: if we get a lead we often go on and extend the lead. If we aren't winning at HT then we struggle in the 2nd half.

Thanks. It’s not shockingly bad, is it? Which rather points to us not having two good halves in us in the same game. We either start slowly and improve, or start well and fade.
