I've just seen on Grimsby live that Andrew's father John has passed away.

He was a Town fan and a fantastic character and great company.

I used to see him on a weekly basis for business and every meeting was an experience to remember! A very generous man and of course his business John Pettit's butchers showed Grimsby in a good light with an international reputation for excellence.

Condolences to Andrew and the family.

I have a lasting memory of John. When I was approaching 16 and didn’t have a clue what I’d do when I left school I speculatively applied for a job in his shop. He didn’t have any vacancies but invited me in to see the shop and talked to me about what training to be a butcher involved.

He then got on the phone to a mate in Legsby Av who had a shop and got me fixed up with an interview which led to an offer of a job. He didn’t have to do that and though I never took the opportunity the value of giving someone a break stuck with me and still does.

RIP John.

I think he once told my Mum there were male and female haggis and asked which she needed. He got into trouble for that and brought a bottle of whisky round to say sorry!

Very sad news.

I used to do his advertising when I worked for the Telegraph. A character and a very generous man. His lunchtime meetings were legendary and of course we had Town as a common interest.
Condolonces to Andrew and the rest of the family.

The Pettit name is synonymous with Grimsby. My Grandad always got his meat from Pettits until it closed. RIP John and thoughts are with your family.

RIP John.

I met him a few times as he used to go to Grimsby Town Cricket Club when I used to go down there occasionally.

A very nice man.

RIP John.

RIP John, a well known and respected Grimbarian. My paternal grandfather always bought his meat from Petitts in the early 1900's. Also, my mother baby sat his children for many years and she described him as a "true gentleman".
