Don't know if this has been put on here before, I haven't seen it, but it's an hour long interview with our old manager Brian Laws. He goes into great detail about the Ivano Bonnetti incident, and at the very end how he got rid of him to Tranmere.

There's some interesting stories about Brian Clough in the first half, but if you want his Grimsby days they start about 31 minutes in.

He speaks well of GTFC and the board of directors about "that" incident
He had a spat with John Aldridge on the pitch, and his payback was to let him have Bonnetti at Tranmere. He rang Lawsy to complain about him upsetting the dressing room!

Thank you for posting the vid it was very good. Eventually, the truth about the Bonnetti incident came out and was different to the media story of the day.

If you want to listen it's on about the 30 min mark.

In fairness, BL’s version of the truth came out. There have been so many different versions of that story that unless you were in the dressing room on that day we will never know for sure exactly how and why it happened.

Thanks for posting the video.
I loved how he reminded me we were indeed punching above our weight. I’d forgotten how good it felt.
Great memories and let’s hope with this newest set up that more great memories are about to be created.

What was interesting was how the signing of Bonnetti came about. I always wondered how on earth we signed him, turns out his agent was looking for an English club and happened to know Laws so gave him a bell. Laws actually played against him in a European game and remembered him. He thought it was a wind up.

We’re still yet to get the truth, we’ve had Laws’s version and Ivano’s but in reality, we’ve not had the actual version.

Someone mentioned that game at Scunny, I remember that chant. At the time I didn’t really feel anything, with hindsight it wasn’t one of our best moments but it still isn’t as embarrassing as Halifax or perhaps even Dagenham last season, although that was predominantly that giant man baby in the ill fitting Stone Island…

I remember Jamie Forrester used to have a blog and he wrote a post about it once years back. Will try and dig it out.

Thank you for posting this. It's a real eye opener to hear the stories from the players themselves. You get to watch them but we don't know what they are like off the pitch. The one thing that comes out of it is how there's always a camourarady which is away nice to hear.

Interesting that they had a drinking culture about the club then... maybe Mike Newell could have done better with us in the 90s

I watched it a few months ago and thought Lawsy came across as quite a decent bloke , The Bonetti incident certainly effected his time with us as I remember us being near the top for a spell before it happened and we had a great side

I've always wondered what might have been had the Bonnetti incidence never happened. We were playing to full houses, playing well. Bonnetti was only the second Italian to play in the Football League, after some other Italian at Forest, which put us in the spotlight. It quickly went downhill after.
