Still the game I've been to where the team most on top in the game lost.

We were absolutely battered that night but the Town defence, Chris Nichol and Batchy in particular were in thou shalt not pass mode that night. Well worth getting drenched for.

Yeah, they were THE team at the time and had won their previous 10 games. As you say, they were at full strength too, this was before clubs played weakened teams in these competitions. That season they went on to win the league, and The Cup Winners Cup (remember that?)

Bloody hell……cannot believe it was 38 years  ago!

Amazing night and you could almost say we did the double over them when we beat them at home 2-1 in what I think was the FA cup…..Mike Brolly double?

We parked the car near the ground and wouldn’t pay some local kids to look after it for us……when we got back we were relieved to see it still there……all 4 wheels on……but no front windscreen!

Driving back over the Pennines was horrendous but what a night!

I saw Paul at the local petrol station recently and told him the story…….he thought it was ace!

He said Neville Southall never forgave him and said it was a lucky goal!

How can they have won the league Cup if we knocked them out? Do you mean they won the FA cup that season? Or they won the league Cup the season before maybe?

Was in the Everton end that night - the only time I’ve been to Goodson Park. Not sure how I managed to get out alive - after Bonnyman chipped that free kick in to Wilkinson in the 89th minute. 7000 Grimsby fans in the opposite end went wild.
Smash and grab to the extreme!

The Cup Winners Cup was contested by all the European FA Cup winners from the previous season. Everton beat Watford in the 1984 FA Cup Final. Watford had one Steve Sherwood in goal that day.
