I have a memory of Super Clive scoring two goals in quick succession, maybe within an minute or two. I've no recollection of who we were playing.

I'm pretty sure he twatted one in from range. I also think the goals were at the pontoon end.

I must've been fairly young at the time hence the excrement details.
Any stattos able to match the game to the memory?

I remember being totally mesmerised by what an amazing player he was.

No it wasn't the comeback game that he took the match ball home. I think this was in an earlier season. I remember that one well.

Sunderland? I remember him robbing a Sunderland defender and hammering it in from outside the box!

I don't know. I'm struggling to find fixtures with results and scorers before 96/97.

His soccerbase doesn't show anything before that.

Super Clive. Great player.

Didn’t he score a hat trick in a Wembley play off final for Charlton?

The Ipswich game at home made me fall in love with football. The first game I went to was Grimsby v Luton the same season and it finished 0-0 and Mendonca was injured then my dad took me to the Ipswich game and Mendonca was excellent.

Yep. The day after our play-off victory over Northampton. Mendonca was a Sunderland fan as well so probably persona non grata in his hometown after that game.

I seem to recall he also started the Premier League season really well. Didn't be score a hat-trick against Liverpool early doors?

I don't remember any specific goals he scored for us but do remember being baffled that the Blades were happy to let him come to BP.

I read an article a year or two ago.  He works at the Nissan factory in Sunderland but he doesn't even have email because he still gets death threats.  How ridiculous!!  What's he supposed to do?  not score because he's from Sunderland.

He actually scored 4 in that game I think as he scored in the penalty shoot-out too IIRC.

That match was on my 13th birthday. Back in the days when you found out the lineup by buying a programme and looking at the back of it. I still class his name on the teamsheet and that hattrick as one of the best presents I've ever received.

I worked with a bloke who was as an ex pro, same age as Super Clive and from the same area of Sunderland, indeed there are still some sad enough to give him stick. He does nothing related to football and got rid of his medals etc. very sad really, it’s very rare that a player should be adored by anymore than one set of fans…

Super Clive Mendonca. Seems to have had it a bit hard really. Is it time for a big Grimsby love-in with super Clive the Mcmenemy headline?

'I walked in the dressing room. The window was open and I thought that a sea fret had got in. Then I saw smoke billowing from a pipe in the corner of the room...it was my centre-forward. He looked seven stone wet through. He went on to score thirty-odd goals that season.' Lawrie McMenemy on encountering the legend that was Matt Tees.
