Dies aged 77. The voice of my childhood. Rest in peace John.

Ah that’s really sad news. I too grew up listening to his commentaries. Probably the best ever in his field. RIP Motty. Hope he gets a minute’s applause at games this coming weekend.

So many iconic moments. His commentary on Gazza's goal against the Jocks in Euro 96 has to be my favourite, which surprisingly isn't included.

Very sad, absolute encyclopedic knowledge of the game, some great lines "the crazy gang versus the culture club" (or similar) to describe the 88 Cup Final.

FA cup finals just aren’t the same without Motty.

RIP to the voice of football

"Falls to Arnold... Arnold! That's it! Thats it! He's sealed it! Grimsby Town are back in the football league!!! Just a minute to go and Nathan Arnold makes it 3-1! Look at the scenes behind the goal! Look at the relief! The agony is finally over!!!"

Very sad news of a commentator I grew up with. Dickie Davis passed away the other day and now Motty. RIP John another of the great commentator gone to the great commentators' gantry in the Sky.

He is amongst a select few commentators who you could tell truly loved the game and could deliver an unbiased commentary on it. Quite often when he used to do a weekend preview on Hawksbee and Jacobs he would be at a lower league game in north or north of London on the Saturday.

I seem to think I remember he said he used to wear a GTFC tie he was given or bought when he came up here for Cup Final day as the colours were neutral (I think he said it was grey and white stripes).

Yes I would have said he was mid to late 80's and very surprised to hear he was just a young 'un really.

I was thinking - he is the archetype. Think ‘football commentator’ and I picture him; large microphone, sheepskin coat, hat. That voice. No greater compliment than that really. The archetype. The commentator’s commentator.
