One of the best penalty takers of all time was West Ham's Ray Stewart, a full back, so maybe there is hope for Glennon in the rest of his career.

I wonder if he was always the designated taker, or if it was a decision made in the moment.
When it comes to penalties at any stage of a match, you have to be prepared. That's half the battle won.
Sounded to me, via radio commentary, that the players didn't really know who had the authority to decide who the taker should be.
Clearly Glennon fancied it and it takes guts to step up, but he scored at Northampton and he's a set piece taker, so from that point of view it made sense.
It seems uncharacteristic of a Hurst side to be unprepared for a penalty. You'd think he'd have that locked down before the match even starts.
I'd be very surprised if it wasn't clear to everyone in the Town side that Glennon was taking it. Its a common tactic these days for teams to have other players take the ball first in order to take the gamesmanship attempts to unsettle the taker away from the guy who's actually going to take it. Seen quite a few teams do that in the last year or so.

Glennon today was the perfect opportunity to stand up take a pen and literally just smash the ball down the middle of the goal. The goalkeeper has the dive. I understand in a penalty shootout why players would go either side but in a match in League 2 at 2-2 place that ball and just smash it down the keepers throat. Our record of pens is absolutely atrocious.
Its easy to say he shouldve hit it down the middle now we know the keeper dived to his right, but if Glennon had smashed it down the middle and the keeper stood still and saved it, he'd be slated for hitting it down the middle. Poor penalty as it was almost relying on the keeper going the other way. Got to assume the keeper is going to guess right and make it un-save-able if he does. That said, people miss penalties all the time so won't lose any sleep over it.

The dreaded "P - word" listening to Radio Humberside i got the impression we were not confident who was going to take it, as the ball was passed between 3 players . Again its who has the "balls" to take it / Confidence to do so under pressure etc. So we got a miss dare i say mention a certain national team when it comes Penalties..Leave it there As for Grimsby well we need to have a couple of confident kickers willing to step up to the plate, on the pitch , down to PH to look at for future . At the end the day we all still follow GTFC !! UTM See you at Southampton.

Absolutely not, when’s the last time you saw a keeper stand down the middle and save a pen? The way that game was going at 2-2 against top of the league I don’t think you have to try be clever you stand up and smash that ball on target.

It took an age for the penalty to happen because of all the players standing on the penalty spot complaining, trying to scuff the ground and then the bookings that needed to happen. I'm sure all of that takes focus off the taker as everything has to be resolved before they can take the kick. Not that it means the taker will definitely miss, some players are able to phase out all the shithousery and stay in the zone but some others will get taken out the right mental space by the delaying and trying to rile up players, damage the pitch, etc.
In the end somebody had to take the penalty and players miss them all the time, even the best players in the world miss them. I don't think anybody in the team currently specialises in pennos so we make do with who we have on the pitch.

I understand the logic of going down the middle. If you hit it hard enough, you should get a rebound if you miss. That said, one of the best penalty takers I've seen in recent years is Harry Maguire who absolutely blasts it in the top corner.

It was clear immediately that Glennon was taking it and everyone knew that. Not sure what game the commentators were watching.

Well I thought holohan was taking it at first, but maybe that’s my eyesight. I also thought Mcatee scored two today, so I definitely need to go to bloody specsavers!! I do admit though, I think holohan should try the next one. I just remember that goal at chesterfield and think he has the best strike of a ball in the squad. Failing that, Hunt. Played great today.

It could've been that — part of a tactic — and I wasn't there, so happy to take other people's views over mine. But from the way Tondeur and Crofty covered the moment, it sounded like McAtee took the ball as soon as the pen was given, then (in their words) Holohan took it off him and looked to be in charge, before Glennon took the ball. As soon as this happened, both JT and Crofty didn't think it would end well, and they were right.
