Scunny Soap Drama

Date: 08/10/2008 (Last updated: 09/10/2008)

GRIMSBY now with new manager Mike Newell travelled down the M180 with 977 fans in tow. Optimistic of victory in light of the appointment of Newell this was going to be an exciting game.

With this being Watkiss's last match in charge could the Mariners send him off with a victory, showing incoming boss Newell just what they are capable of?

Town made one change from Saturday: Jarmo for Ameobi. Instantly from kick off Town were having to defend, as Scunthorpe pressed and within the first two mins Scunthorpe had two chances cleared off the line.

With the large barmy army following, Town were in full vocal tonight, out singing Scunthorpe 10-1.

Town's first chance came just after 15 mins when Till's shot went just wide off a deflection, Town now on the attack saw a great opportunity hit the bar when Jarmo's header was just a tad too high for the Scunny born striker.

With both Grimsby and Scunthorpe pressing for the opening goal both clubs saw some good chances go to waste.

The breakthrough came just after 35 mins when a foul by Hunt lead to the goal by Togwell who was left unmarked by the Town players, heading to score from about 10 yards out.

Scunthorpe continued to press for the remaining 10 mins and within 7 Scunthorpe found themselves two up when Morris shot to the bottom left hand side of Barnes.

Half time Score Scunthorpe 2 Grimsby 0

Crowd rating 9/10

The faithful Mariners carried on the singing, much to the annoyance of Scunthorpe fans housed to the left where 4 or 5 were ejected in the first half. With the second half 15 mins away, was there chance of a comeback?

Matty Newton now picks up the story in Second Half
