Braintree Shock the Mariners

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 13/04/2016

A disappointing display against promotion rivals Braintree dented Town's play-off hopes last night. The Mariners struggled to break down the opposition and succumbed to a second half goal from Braintree substitute Miles which proved to be the game's only strike.

The result now puts the pressure on Town to win at third placed Dover at the weekend. Monkhouse and Hoban return for the Mariners in a controversial decision by Paul Hurst, as he reverted to the side which started at Aldershot and was 2-0 down at half time.

A low-key first half ended 0-0. Andy Monkhouse missed Town's best chance just before half time.

Town had most of the play but Braintree broke the deadlock with a goal by substitute Miles from one of their rare attacks following a counter-attack by the visitors after Grimsby gave the ball away in midfield.

Town hit the crossbar in the dying seconds, which was the best chance of the game for the home side.

It was a good defensive display by a hard-working Braintree side whose game plan worked to perfection.

Town have to lick their wounds and get enough points in the remaining games to ensure they finish in the play-offs.
