Beat the Bookies: Week 8

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 28/09/2012

TWO wins out of five last week was sufficient to claw back a bit of money from the bookies, leaving us more or less level for the season to date. Back to where we started!

Newport v Grimsby is a difficult one to call this week. But for Niven's absence I'd probably go for Town, but breaking up a winning team for a trip to the league leaders tips the balance slightly. There doesn't look great value on any of the three outcomes, so as ever we turn our attention elsewhere.

Premier League

  • Fulham v Man City - home win (4.8, Smarkets). One of these teams is the form team, the other one is struggling. You work it out. Here's a clue, they're the home team.
  • Reading v Newcastle - away win (2.5, Coral). Reading have really struggled defensively this season in both league and cup, and Newcastle have some of the best attackers in the division. Reading's best hope is Kebe's return. Expect a few goals in this tie, but Newcastle should edge it.

    League One

  • Bournemouth v Walsall - away win (5.56, Pinnacle). Walsall have won 3 out of 4, Bournemouth have won 1 out of 4. Looking at the bookies' odds you would think it is the other way round!

    Blue Square Premier

  • Stockport v Ebbsfleet United - home win. (2.3, Pinnacle). Ebbsfleet are a club struggling in form and confidence. They did well to get a point at home to Woking in midweek, although they were a little fortunate. They'll do even better to get anything at Stockport.
  • Forest Green v Lincoln City - draw (4.333, Blue Square). There are signs, like Darling's "green shots of recovery", that Lincoln are slowly improving for a dismal start. Wins over Hyde and Nuneaton both had elements of luck to them, but the Imps got over the line. It would be a very bold man who bets on an away win in this televised clash, but a draw is not beyond the Imps.

    Blue Square South

  • Dover v Maidenhead Utd (4.33, 888 Sport). Dover just can't win at home in the league. Maidenhead have shown over the last couple of years that they are not afraid of the more fancied teams in the league, and can come away from the better supported clubs with handsome spoils.
