Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

Buckley Attacks Grimsby

IN AN ARTICLE in the Grimsby Telegraph today which reported on the Talksport programme about life at Lincoln, manager Alan Buckley fired a salvo at the Grimsby Town board and said how nice it was to be working with genuine people again claiming Grimsby would not have gone down under his managership

"I'm just delighted to be back working with footballers," said Buckley, whose Lincoln side have won three straight games since he took charge of the third division side.

"I went to talk to the Lincoln people a couple of weeks ago and they seemed very genuine people. After the board change at Grimsby 15 months ago, it's nice to work with genuine people again."

"They're lovely people and a couple have been directors before. They've got the good of the club at heart and they're not trying to line their own pockets or anything like that."

"All they want to see is Lincoln City being very successful."

Buckley said the Mariners would never have been relegated. "I think the thing is we got them so far and we got very well established twice under my management at Grimsby," he went on.

"Then people begin to get false expectations and Grimsby, certainly under my managership, where never in danger of going down."

"The biggest thing, it wasn't really the fans, they had some entrepreneurs get control of the club, and I don't think I was ever going to work hand in glove with them like I had the previous board."

Tough words from Buckley who perhaps needs to be reminded of the two tough seasons we had with him and his insistence in saying that no loan players were available and his stubborn refusal to accept that changes were needed which eventually caused his sacking.

There can be no doubt that he was one of the best managers Grimsby Town have seen at Blundell Park bringing success and glory to the club with promotion to the first division and two visits to Wembley. Success that later soured with fans calling for his dismissal not long after he was hailed as "the greatest"

Notwithstanding that, Grimsby fans still have a great respect for Alan Buckley and this was clearly demonstrated when he was appointed to the Lincoln job with fans congratulating him and sending their good wishes.
