Jol: "We Were Immature"

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 21/09/2005

MARTIN Jol, Spurs manager, was angry with his squad and said they lacked passion. "That's what you can expect when you lose to a team like that. Sometimes we looked a bit immature and our best player was Aaron Lennon when he came on and he's only 18 years of age."

"This is definitely my worst moment in management. It's obviously one of the biggest upsets in the Carling Cup but I expected Grimsby to play like that because they've been doing well this season."

"We created three or four chances but that's not enough."

"I always knew it could be all over if they got a corner or set-piece and that's what happened. My players should want to play but they didn't show it and my two strikers didn't cause them enough problems."

"It's a very big blow because this cup was special to us this year and I was hoping for a better result. We are a Premiership team and should have done a lot better. We didn't use our extra quality and they fought harder than us."

Russell Slade said: "We gave them a good run for their money all night, but I didn't see the goal coming so late in the game."

"Kalala came on a free from Nice in the summer. He's very good on the ball and tends to raise his game against better opposition. He looked a class act."

"The fact that Martin put out his strongest possible side makes it an even more impressive result for us."

"I was in charge of Scarborough when they played Chelsea in the FA Cup a couple of years ago and lost 1-0, but this tops that."

".…I have never witnessed the fans in such vocal form!…."

"I'm so pleased to get a Premiership scalp. I now want another Premiership side in the next round."

On the fans Slade said; "I have never witnessed the fans in such vocal form since I have been here and I am sure that had a bearing on the game."

"We are crying out for that sort of support on a weekly basis and hopefully the fans have learnt their lesson in terms of getting behind the side."

"It's great reward because this little club has suffered a lot of negativity in recent years with two relegations."

"We turned the corner in giving the club some stability. When I arrived last season we only had four senior professionals at the football club."

"Now we have a squad of 21 and we are top of the league. Within a year I think we are doing pretty well, although there is still a lot of work to do. But the signs are bright."
