GRIMSBY are just one game round from reaching Wembley for the second successive year after beating Tamworth 4-1 in the quarter finals of the FA Trophy. First half goals from strikers Lenell John-Lewis and new signing Oumare Tounkara gave Grimsby a comfortable half time lead.

On 18 John-Lewis finished off a slide rule pass from Tounkara. With 5 minutes to go before half time Tounkara chased onto a long ball from Kerr, the defence and 'keeper hesitated, and Tounkara slotted it in to score on his home debut.

In the second half Tamworth came into the game and got a deserved goal back when the ball fell to Chadwick in the box.

After a sustained period of Tamworth pressure Grimsby, on a rare breakaway attack, scored a third on 70 when a John-Lewis shot was saved and the ball bounced to McLaughlin to restore the 2 goal cushion.

Sub Andy Cook added a fourth in injury time, finishing off a McLaughlin cross. It was a clinical performance from Town who scored in periods of the game when they were on top, and defended well in the second half spell where they are on the back foot.

Good as the result was, and at least a replay was avoided, it now means two Saturdays have been wiped off the league program - and a third will follow if Grimsby reach Wembley. The Mariners are unable to play the next two Tuesdays so there will be some inevitable fixture congestion as March approaches.

Most Town supporters will be praying to avoid Cambridge in the two-legged semi-finals of the FA Trophy, although it will involve a much longer to trip to either Gosport, Havant or Aldershot in one of the legs if the Grimsby and Cambridge are kept apart.
