Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

The Challenge Ahead

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 04/03/2018

GRIMSBY'S winless run in 2018 extended to March as the Mariners were well beaten by Carlisle and once again failed to find the net. New boss Michael Jolley has a week to turn things around before the first of three "cup finals" at Blundell Park takes place against Port Vale.

With new boss Michael Jolley watching from the stands, caretaker Paul Wilkinson made two changes In came Luke Summerfield and Jamille Matt, with JJ Hooper dropping to the bench and Harry Clifton missing from the matchday squad.

Grimsby had no more than half chances before former Mariner Jamie Devitt's powerful drive bounced off the crossbar.

After the break Town had their best chances when a long ball played into the box made its way to Cardwell, but the young striker failed to get a proper strike on goal.

But Carlisle put the game beyond doubt when Ellis nodded in from a corner, despite McKeown appearing to have been pushed to the ground. Town conceded a late penalty after a foul by Summerfield but McKeown kept Town from going further behind with a save.

Town have three home games against Port Vale, Chesterfield and Barnet, plus an away game at Forest Green. They probably need to win at least 3 of these 4 games if they are not going to get many other points in the remaining games. The immediate target is to beat Port Vale, which will be Michael Jolley's first game in charge.
