Phil Gray Interest

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 07/10/2000

The latest in a long string of players to be linked with Lennie Lawrence is Burnley and Northern Ireland international striker Phil Gray. 32-year-old Gray, who played for Lawrence when he was Luton manager, would be available for a "small fee".

The experienced forward is injury prone and has been out for most of the season following a hamstring tear sustained in training during early September. Gray has an "aggressive and inventive style", but is not the tallest of strikers at just 5'9''. A Northern Ireland international on 22 occasions, Gray last played for his country on 2nd September, scoring the winner in a 1-0 victory over Malta. The Belfast-born forward had a spell with Dutch club Fortuna Sittard, before Lawrence signed him for Luton Town. Lawrence, who has stated on several occasions that he is seeking to try players on trial or in a loan spell before he offers them a contract, said today on Phil Gray: "Phil Gray is a possibility and it would probably be a small fee. The only worry is that he's been injury prone and that he would have to prove his fitness first." Lawrence is hoping to bring in at least one and possibly two players in time for the Huddersfield game at Blundell Park on Saturday.
