Spurs Defender Signs

By: Stephen Bateman
Date: 06/12/2000

Grimsby Town have strengthened their squad further today, with news that they have signed Tottenham Hotspur defender Neil Lacey. Lennie Lawrence completed the loan deal this afternoon and Lacey is expected to begin training with the Mariners tomorrow.

18-year old Lacey, who began his career with Arsenal, has been drafted in on a one month deal as emergency cover in light of the Mariners current injury crisis. With Tony Gallimore, Paul Raven, Steve Livingstone, Richard Smith and Danny Butterfield all carrying injuries, it is expected that Lacey will be a useful temporary addition to the squad. Lacey has had limited opportunities at White Hart Lane and a club insider described the move as "work experience". It remains to be seen whether or not the youngster will figure in Lawrence's first team plans. Lacey joins fellow British trialist, Newcastle United keeper Stephen Grindley, in Paul Wilkinson's reserve squad. Grindley came on as a second half substitute during yesterday's reserve friendly with Barnsley's second string at Blundell Park.
