Willems Deal Halted

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 28/02/2001

The Menno Willems signing has come to a sudden halt today with the two clubs being unable to reach an agreement on the payment terms. Although Vitesse Arnhem and Grimsby Town have agreed on a fee and Willems has agreed personal terms the method of payment has been the stumbling block.

Grimsby, in the meantime, have asked for an extension on the loan period until the negotiations are completed. The loan agreement expires tonight and manager Lawrence wants him in the team on Saturday against Barnsley.

Vitesse Arnhem are confident the transfer will go ahead but it depends upon them agreeing on the Grimsby suggested payment terms. There have been no differences between the two clubs regarding the fee which was arranged almost at the time that Willems first arrived at Grimsby and neither club have attempted to change that original agreement.

It is likely that Vitesse Arnhem will agree the deal before the weekend. failing which Willems will return to his club and sit out until the summer when he can come to Grimsby for free. The latter scenario will not suit the Dutch side as they wish to get some return on the deal, so it is unlikely that they will refuse to co-operate with Grimsby regarding payments.

An earlier story that Willems had signed for the Mariners (which was reported in the Dutch newspaper, De Gerlander) was incorrect.
