Who will win League 2?

Buckley Targets Cockerill

By: Richard Lord
Date: 08/04/2001

FORMER Grimsby Town manager Alan Buckley is making the assistant manager's position at the Imps a top priority since signing a 3-year contract at Lincoln City earlier this week, and is believed to be targeting current number two at Blundell Park, John Cockerill for the post.

"We need another member of staff" the former Baggies boss told the Grimsby Telegraph. "I asked John Scofield to step up and help with the first team and he's been marvellous to work with.

"In the long run John [Scofield] will go back down, if they're the right words, to the youth team, and show all the youth coaches how I want the game to be played and pass my ideas on."

From there, his attentions will be turning to the current vacancy for a number two at Sincil bank. Buckley is renowned for attracting former players and staff to work with him, and Cockerill will be high on his wanted list. Whether 'Cockers' will be willing to step down two divisions and leave behind his hometown club where he is so highly regarded, remains to be seen. However, the pair go back a long way, and Cockerill in particular was reported to be devastated when Grimsby Town sacked Alan Buckley back in August last year.
