Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Donno Set for Barnsley

By: Peter Forrester
Date: 17/05/2001

NOTTINGHAM FOREST manager David Platt declared his interest for Grimsby Town winger Kevin Donovan today. However it looks unlikely Donovan will be going to the City Ground as Barnsley are still clear favourites to secure the ex-Baggie's name on the dotted line.

Platt has seen the right-sided midfielder a couple of times but is not optimistic about bringing the player to Forest saying "I would not say there's no truth in it but we are not close to a deal and I would think he would go somewhere else."

Grimsby manager Lennie Lawrence has been singing the 29 year old's praises during the past week, claiming Donovan is the best player at the Blundell Park at the minute. The Town boss however appears resigned to the Halifax-born midfielder's departure after every attempt to keep him at Blundell Park to date has failed.

Forest, who finished outside the Play-Offs this season, have also been tracking the situation with Town keeper Danny Coyne but they will not be getting Donovan as it is known he would favour a move to a club nearer his home in Leeds.

This rules Forest out and puts Barnsley top of the list and with Tykes boss Nigel Spackman wanting to strengthen his midfield for an assault on Division One next season, Donovan seems certain to be in Yorkshire for the start of the next campaign.
