Goal Of The Season Competition Winner Announced!

By: The Fishy Team
Date: 30/05/2001

THE FISHY TEAM approached our No. 1 match writer Tony Butcher to nominate the winning goal. Tony explains: "In making my choice for the Goal Of The Season I considered whether it should be an individual effort, a magnificent strike, or a team goal. I settled for a mixture of strike and team."

"I ruled out Donovan's goal against Fulham because he ran in a straight line and no-one, literally, bothered to tackle him. The goalie didn't try either. It looked good from the side, but from behind the goal...."

"I chose therefore Donovan against Crewe"

This is from the report of the goal from the match report on the Fishy to remind people of the goal:

"Town didn't tear into Crewe so much as continue to muddle through. Livvo sliced a shot wide of the 'keeper's left hand post from the edge of the area and, a few minutes later, made Bankole dive low to his left and push the ball away for a corner. Now that was a good save, credit where credit is due.

Sandwiched in between these moments Crewe should have had a penalty. For the umpteenth time a ball over the top caught Enhua out. Hulse got behind him and Enhua hauled him down with a rolling maul. Perhaps Town's luck had changed?

After 56 minutes it did. Nielsen received a throw in on the Town right twisted, turned and hit a hard low pass across the face of the penalty area. Campbell laid the ball off first time into a big space on the centre right edge of the area and DONOVAN ran in and hit a superb first time drive into the 'keeper's top right hand corner. Unstoppable and a great goal!!"

There was only one winning entry and that was from Mad Lennie who receives the copy of Mariners Log kindly donated by GTFC. Thank you to all who entered. Please remember, the judges decision is final!
