Lawrence Scandinavian Scouting Sortee

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 02/09/2001

GRIMSBY manager Lennie Lawrence plans to jet off to Scandinavia this week on a defensive scouting mission. With Town not participating in a competitive fixture until next weekend, the 53-year-old Town boss is utilising the opportunity to cast his eye over central defenders.

"I need to get some bodies in because we have a really heavy programme coming up. Next midweek is free but after that we have two games a week right through September," the Grimsby boss told Mariners Net.

With Newcastle United defender David Beharall's month-long loan spell due to end shortly, Lawrence intends to try and persuade both the Town board and the Geordie centre back, who has begun to form a solid partnership with club skipper Paul Groves, to join the club for a longer period - possibly in a season-long loan.

With Paul Raven and emergency centre back Steve Livingstone both currently injured and out of action for at least a fortnight, as well as the uncertainty over Beharall's future, Lawrence is desperate for additional defensive resources to provide adequate cover for the busy month ahead.

"....I have got a plan regarding David Beharall..."

"I have got a plan regarding David," said Lawrence. "I need to discuss it with him and the board before I make it public, but I have clear thoughts to what I want to do with him. If we do get David we still need another centre-back as cover in case he or Groves pick up an injury."

Toulouse trialist Hamada Jambay, who is believed can operate either as a full back or in a central defensive position, is another possible option up Lawrence's sleeve to boost the Grimsby rearguard.
