Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Grimsby players should copy Beckham says Lawrence!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 12/10/2001

GRIMSBY TOWN must copy the example of David Beckham if they are to get a result from the Sheffield United game said Lennie Lawrence today. "The top players like Beckham come off big games like England last week and go straight in for Man United and do a job."

Talking to Stuart Rowson of the Grimsby Telegraph Lawrence said: "My players aren't going to Arsenal or Chelsea, they're going to Sheffield United in the first division and they have to be able to handle it. I haven't got the players to rotate and if they can't handle it we're going to go backwards not forwards."

"We've got to stop losing, no ifs, no buts.

"I'm saying to them if we lose this game and lose against Watford then we're in the relegation battle - the bottom six. Next midweek everybody will be playing apart from us, so we'll be level on games with most people. Two draws would keep us at least halfway."

Lennie also pointed outr that the Worthington cup draw will take place about an hour before Town kick off against Sheffield United but said "The players won't be bothered about that because it's a long way away at the end of November. What we're going to do this season will be defined before we kick another ball in the Worthington Cup."

"...What we don't need is Watford away!..."

"John (Cockerill) made an interesting point. He pointed out that it's probably the strongest last 16 in the history of the competition. There's 13 Premier League teams and three from the first division and that's it. Nobody from the second or third divisions."

"What we don't need is Watford away. Sheffield Wednesday I don't mind because it's a local one. Other than that, I don't care."

Grimsby Town: Coyne, Beharall, Gallimore, Groves, Broomes, Campbell, Pouton, Butterfield, Chapman, Rowan, Jevons, Croudson, Allen, Boulding, Coldicott, Willems, Ford.
