Grimsby Deny Lawrence Blues Link

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 22/10/2001

GRIMSBY TOWN have denied receiving any approaches for their manager Lennie Lawrence after a report in a Sunday newspaper named the Town boss as Birmingham City's target to succeed Trevor Francis. Lawrence himself has not heard anything from the Midlands club other than what he's read in the press.

"It's flattering to be linked with a big club like that," the Grimsby manager told Radio Humberside. "To be honest I'm only really focussing on getting us back up the league again. Having said that I've still got ambition. I've taken two clubs up and out of this division but, no disrespect, I'd struggle to do that here!

"My contract goes on until the end of the season and unless someone tells me anything else I'll be concentrating on trying to get us up the league", he added.

Lawrence was the Nationwide Manager of the Month for Division One in October, after he led the Mariners to the summit of the football league for the first time in twenty years. Since then their form has crumbled, and Town have now gone eight games without a win, taking just two points in the process.

Lawrence has the reputation as a man who is a past master at avoiding relegation with less glamorous clubs - a role many would say is apt for the Mariners in the First Division, competing alongside much more wealthy and glamorous clubs as they are.

The paper reported that Lawrence was at the top of the Birmingham co-owner David Sullivan's list to replace Francis, who was sacked last week, and that an official approach for the Lawrence was expected to be tabled in the near future.
