Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Bradley Allen Shock Move?

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 20/02/2002

The Fishy has received a report, from a usually reliable source close to the Scunthorpe club, that Bradley Allen is to move soon from Grimsby Town to Scunthorpe United in the latest GTFC attempt to trim the wages bill.

Our understanding is that an announcement will be made shortly

Brian Laws, who has been keeping tabs on former Charlton and QPR forward Allen at a couple of recent Grimsby reserve outings, is desperate for a quality striker now that Iron target man Martin Carruthers is out for the season.

Former Grimsby boss Laws is believed to have persuaded Allen to move down the road to Glanford Park on a free transfer, and Grimsby have no definite replacement lined up yet. Indeed whether the Mariners actually intend to bring in anyone other than the mystery Premiership loan forward we have heard of recently is doubtful.

Town fans will be dismayed to learn that one of the most experienced players at the club is about to depart when the Mariners need all the firepower they can muster to avoid the drop to Division Two.

It is not clear yet whether Allen has been offered terms by the Mariners but decided to take up an offer from Laws and is therefore leaving of his own accord, or is part of the cost cutting exercise.

The cash-strapped board have released a number of players recently including right back Alan Neilson and Dutch duo Robert Busscher and Ronald Ermes, and it appears they are intent on trimming an already tiny squad to the minimum necessary to play out the final few weeks of the season.
