3 Year Contracts For Groves's Team!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 18/04/2002

GRIMSBY Town are to give Paul Groves and his management team three year contracts as a reward for saving the club from first division relegation. Talks between Paul Groves, Graham Rodger and Town chairman Peter Furneaux are in progress and should be finalized by next week.

Releasing the news today the Grimsby Telegraph said Furneaux believes that the deals on the table are just rewards for how the pair responded to their mammoth task.

"I hope they maintain the progress they've already shown. We think that they could be a management team for the future. We recognise that they've got great potential and we want them to fulfil that here. They have done a marvellous job."

Groves still has a year left on his playing contract and he is expected to agree a two-year management extension to that.

But it is unclear said the Telegraph whether Groves, who will be 37 when his current deal expires, will continue as player/manager after next summer.

"Paul is 36 now and he already has a playing contract with us for one year and we are talking about extending that, and incorporating the manager's contract." said Furneaux. "We all assumed we were going to achieve safety and always had every confidence in the both of them. If we didn't, we wouldn't have given them the job."

"They are both down to earth and know exactly what they want. They know how this club works, they've been brought up here, and we can all work together."

Furneaux said Groves insisted that Rodger should continue as his assistant.
