Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Groves Faces Decision Time!

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 05/08/2002

PAUL Groves is due to make a decision this week whether to keep trialists Grant McCann and Greg Young.

Groves claims he is likely to sign up two more players before the season kicks off against Norwich on Saturday.

Both of the two trial players have impressed during their time at Blundell Park. Greg Young, released by Sheffield Wednesday last season has done well, but after the signing of Steve Chettle and Simon Ford the club now have four central defenders, including Raven and Groves, on their books.

West Ham midfielder McCann has returned to Upton Park after his two day trial to await a phone call from Blundell Park. The 22-year-old Northern Ireland international has made four substitute appearances for the Hammers, but has played at Notts County and Cheltenham on loan.

Meanwhile new recruit Darren Barnard revealed that he signed for Town to keep himself in contention for the Welsh squad. "There's not many players in the Second Division that are in an international squad, so that was a major factor. I want to play at the highest level I can, and I feel I'm good enough to play in the First Division at least."

"Hopefully I can prove to everyone at Grimsby that I am a good player, and maybe one day play in the Premier League. Wales are doing really well and hopefully we can go on and qualify for the European Championships." the Welshman told Radio Humberside.
