A Team To Remember!

By: Mariners Net
Date: 03/11/2005

HERE is a framed photograph of the Mariners (below) that could be labelled 'Simply the Best!', for this squad ended up in fifth position in Division One.

That is the equivalent of the current Premier League, drawing twice with the giants of the day - Arsenal, and beating other top teams Huddersfield (5-1 away), doing the double over Wolves, hammering Spurs 3-0 on Christmas Day, and stuffing Chelsea 3-1 at Blundell Park.

By the end of the season, only Arsenal, Sunderland, Sheffield Wednesday, and Manchester City were above the Mariners. Liverpool, Everton, Stoke City, Preston NE, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Blackburn, Wolves, and the rest were left behind in the Mariners wake! Tottenham finished bottom, and Manchester United weren't in the same League!

The winning bidder of this item will see some of the acknowledged greatest Town players of all time - the 'Greatest Mariner Ever' - Pat Glover, the 'Mighty Atom' Jackie Bestall, goalkeeping legend George Tweedy, record-breaking half-back line Hall, Betmead and Buck, as well as other Town favourites of the era 'Rocket' Read, Ted Kelly, Hughie Jacobson, and many more beside. There too is arguably Grimsby's greatest ever manager Frank Womack.

Many of these players had set the Second Division alive the season before by storming to the Championship a massive 7 points clear of Preston.

This item will give years of pleasure to any genuine Town fan, and they will receive a certificate of authenticity to show that this is the genuine article. Did we say genuine?

Well, everything bar the date above the photo! For here is a mistake & the inscription is one season out! This is the squad at the beginning of the momentous 1934-5 season, not the Second Division Championship winning 1933-4 campaign. Well in the Mariners glory years, one year was pretty much the same as every other!
