Where will Grimsby be next season?

Macca: Another Year

Macca Set to Continue

VETERAN defender John McDermott has voiced his intentions to continue playing for at least another year. Town's record appearance holder had planned to retire at the end of the current campaign, but his form and fitness this year have convinced Macca there's more yet to come.

"My initial thoughts at the beginning of the season were to call it a day at the end of this one, but I think I've changed my mind," Macca told Mariners Net.

Speaking to a few of the lads, Crofty and that, they said I should carry on and to be honest I think I'm going to

"At the moment I'm feeling in good nick, I'm enjoying it and that's down to the manager and the team."

36-year-old Macca currently has a coaching role at Blundell Park in addition to his playing contract, and that's something he would love to continue going into next season.

"If we get promotion I might get another contract. I'm playing for one now. I'll have a word with the manager and the chairman and see what their thoughts are on it."

Macca is still six years younger than another former Grimsby defender Tony Ford when he finally hung his boots up. Ford carried on playing league football until the age of 42. There are also several other older players in the Football Leauge at the moment than Macca: Scunthorpe's Peter Beagrie is 40 and Oldham's David Eyres is 41.
