Slade To Leave

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 29/05/2006

RUSSELL Slade would seem to be on his way out of Blundell Park after contract talks with Town Chairman John Fenty broke down today, and Fenty's deadline for Slade to sign has now passed.

Town had offered a three year deal to Slade prior to Sunday's play-off final, which the Town boss, whose existing contract expires at the end of the month, refused to sign. That offer has now been withdrawn and replaced with a lesser package believed to be only one year.

"We've failed to agree terms with Russell so we're left in a situation where that contract is null and void," Fenty told BBC Radio Humberside.

A frustrated John Fenty issed an ultimatium to Slade saying, "We've asked Russell put forward what does he want. We want him to tell us so we can make a decision about who is going to be the new manager."

Rumours abound that League One outfit Yeovil, who are due to name a new manager next week, have Slade on their shortlist. Barry Fry's Peterborough United are also due to make an appoinment soon, although ex-Lincoln boss Keith Alexander is the favourite for that job.

The big question is when Slade was approached by another club and how much that affected his preparations for Sunday's big game.

In the meantime the majority of Grimsby fans do not want to see Russell Slade come back to Blundell Park, including the editorial staff and many contributors to this site. A poll on The Fishy is currently showing only one third of Town fans would like to see Slade return.

Town fans are already naming their prefered replacements with Tony Ford (Rochdale No. 2), Paul Wilkinson (Cardiff No. 2), and Glen Cockerill (Woking) all being touted as the new Grimsby manager.
