Town Near New Low

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 17/01/2007

SHOULD Grimsby lose to Darlington on Saturday without scoring a goal they will beat the club record for the longest number of consecutive goalless defeats, which now stands at 5.

Twice now in Town's 128-year history have they lost five times in succession without scoring. The first occasion was in 1987 when Mike Lyons was manager. Grimsby ended that season being relegated from what is now the Championship. The second occasion was reached when Town were defeated 2-0 by Walsall on Monday night.

The table below shows what, before Monday night, was the worst ever run of consecutive goalless defeats, which took place shortly before Alan Buckley arrived at the club for the first time in 1988.

21-Mar-87Plymouth(a)0-5
28-Mar-87Shrewsbury(h)0-1
04-Apr-87C Palace(h)0-1
11-Apr-87Millwall(a)0-1
18-Apr-87Huddersfield(h)0-1

The Mariners have currently lost the last five games by the scorelines 0-2, 0-3, 0-4, 0-2 and 0-2 - a worse record than in 1987, compounded by the fact that the Mariners are two divisions lower in English football than they were in 1987.

Grimsby still have some way to go to equal the record for the longest run of defeats, which stands at 8, as shown below

30-Nov-1907Leyton Orient(a)1-2
07-Dec-1907Bradford(h)0-1
14-Dec-1907Leeds City(a)1-4
21-Dec-1907Hull City(a)2-4
25-Dec-1907Derby(a)0-4
26-Dec-1907Gainsborough(a)2-3
28-Dec-1907Wolves(a)1-5
04-Jan-1908Lincoln(h)0-2

Grimsby have also lost 7 times on the spin in the 1909-10, 1919-20 and 1926-27 seasons and 6 times in the 1922-23, 1947-48, 1957-58, 1958-59, 1962-63 and 2002-03 seasons.
