Town Make Huge Loss

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 30/11/2007

TOWN made a trading loss of over a quarter of a million pounds last season, on top of which they wrote off more than half a million pounds on the stadium relocation project, making a total loss for the year of £857,513.

With Town's tax debt still standing at £279K and gates continuing to fall, it reiterates the point made by John Fenty recently that the club is still losing money. That can only be addressed in the short term by getting more spectators through the turnstiles, or by attracting additional investment in the club by businesses or wealthy individuals.

In the longer term only the new stadium offers the prospect of having a viable football club in the town. But we may not get that far if we stop going to support our team at Blundell Park.

Last season alone the directors (i.e. John Fenty) had to put in £465K to the club's coffers to offset the combined trading losses, relocation costs and the ongoing repayments to the Inland Revenue.

It is timely that the news has been released on the eve of Town's big FA Cup tie with Huddersfield, which could potentially prove to be Grimsby's biggest game of the season should they win it. Although the chances of winning the FA Cup are negligible, a single match at one of the top Premiership clubs in Round Three or later could be worth over half a million pounds to the Mariners.

If you are wavering about whether or not to go the game tomorrow at Huddersfield what better reason can there be to cheer Grimsby on than the financial incentive that the match gives to Town. Plus, with it being a cup game, you will be giving the Mariners some money via the gates receipts as well. See you there.

Up the Mariners!
