Player Ratings: vs Chesterfield

By: Dr Fishy
Date: 05/01/2008

FOLLOWING another away win Dr Fishy gives his opinion on the Mariners' individual performances in today's 2-1 win over Chesterfield at Saltergate.

Barnes – made one or two vital saves for Town but his two kicking errors, and tendency to flap at crosses, could have cost Town dear. 6/10

Hird – improved after half time but gave the ball away far too easily in the first half and seemed to always be looking to lump the ball up to Jones. On another day his poor distribution would have been punished but another reasonable performance from the on-loan Doncaster man. 6/10

Hegarty – delivered one or two dangerous balls from the left hand side but it wasn’t ‘Heggers’ best display. Looked better after half time and threatened with a few dangerous runs but generally didn't settle. 6/10

Atkinson – started the game terribly with one or two very weak clearances and was caught out of position a number of times. However, like many of the Town side, he improved after half time and gave a solid performance. 6/10

Newey – the stand in captain distributed the ball well and was solid at the back. However, Tom maybe should’ve walked for a clear handball on the edge of the area. Despite being pushed by the overweight (any other words? Ok, fat.) Fletcher as the referee gave the foul – he should’ve walked by the letter of the law. However, to Town’s relief Tom was only booked and stayed in to marshal the left side of Town’s back three solidly. 7/10

Bennett – learnt an important lesson today. For the first twenty minutes he was bullied, like Atkinson, by that man Fletcher again but he recovered and despite being substituted in the second half for the more experienced Fenton he was probably unlucky to be taken off ahead of Atkinson. Booked for a rash tackle on Fletcher. Solid and cleared a certain goal off the line. 7/10

Hunt – the new Ray Wilkins? He’s certainly not going to burst forward and score you goals but he looked solid in midfield, without standing out, and helped steady the inexperienced Town backline. 7/10

Clarke – like Hunt he got on today and did his job without taking the headlines. Offered Town another solid body in midfield and combined well with Jones to set up North's first. 7/10

Bolland – drove Town forward from midfield and was constantly looking to spread the ball out wide to Hegarty and Hird. Probably one of his better displays this season in my eyes. 8/10

Jones – ‘Lump’ undoubtedly should’ve scored just after half time when the ball fell to him on the edge as Chesterfield keeper Roache was stranded. Instead Jones failed to look up and couldn’t get his shot away in time. However, it was another tidy performance as he held the ball up well and combined well with Clarke to put North through for his first in first half stoppage time. 7/10

North – a constant threat all game for the Spireites as his pace caused their back four all sorts of problems. Took his first goal beautifully and did his best Jack Lester impression in the second half to earn a penalty – which he converted confidentially. Northy was without doubt the man of the match and for the second time in a week won the game for the Mariners. 9/10 MOM
