Stockport v Grimsby Preview

By: Alex Green
Date: 08/01/2008

IT’S SO close you can already feel your feet already stomping up Wembley Way can't you? Only Stockport and an unnamed assailant can stop the beautifully costly day out.

The Opposition

Overview

It was 17 days ago since Town made their last trip to Edgeley Park where the Mariners earned a valuable point on the road. With such a brilliant record away from home confidence is high from us Mariners and anything could seem possible after this hectic festive period. Stockport too have a great run of form with 5 wins from 7, a draw against ourselves and a defeat to Shrewsbury were the only things stopping County taking a full 21 points from the last few games. Those points could prove to have been desperately needed as they fight fiercely for a place in the play-offs this year, and currently are only 4 points off Wycombe in seventh. All the teams above Stockport have a game in hand and Rochdale just below have three so the pressure is on for them to maintain their good run of form and the added pressure of a high octane cup match is all Jim Gannon (left) and his players needed.

The Team
At home Stockport have worries, conceding three more then Town have all season and they only one more win then us with our dreadful home form. In goal on loan Leicester stopper Conrad Logan (left) is doing his utmost to keep out the opposition, the 21-year-old has conceded 39 goals in the league this season so far but hasn't let one in during the entire cup competition. In defence former Scunthorpe loanee Michael Rose is becoming a rock with 34 appearances this season with Ashley Williams in support.

In front of the duo is the former University of Dublin captain Gary Dicker and Adam Griffin. Up front Stockport have two high scoring strikers in home grown talent Liam Dickinson and Anthony Elding both have scored 5 in the last 3 matches.

Key Player
Anthony Elding (left) formerly of Boston is County’s leading scorer with 13 including a hattrick against struggling Brentford early on in the season helping his confidence. He has scored three in as many games of late and the run of form hasn't come soon enough for Elding who had previously gone eight games without a goal. Now in form and finding the net regularly if he is in the squad, Elding will be the major trouble for our defence.

    Head to Head

Although Town have a good record overall against Stockport, in recent years it has not been great. Grimsby have not won the last eight against the Hatters, and it is 18 years since Town last won at Edgeley Park

Stockport Head-to-Head (35th on The Opposition Ladder)

    Last Meeting

    Stockport 1 Grimsby 1 (Sat 22nd December 2007)

We only have to cast our minds back to the Saturday before Christmas, when Town were just minutes away from an unexpected away win over Stockport County. Martin Butler had given Town a well deserved first half lead. But County's second half pressure eventually told and Stockport levelled with seven minutes to go.
