Applications Pile In

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 18/09/2008

GRIMSBY have been "inundated" with applications for the vacant manager's job according to Town Chairman John Fenty. "We have had numerous applications already - we've been inundated in fact and that's good news," the Town chairman told the Grimsby Telegraph.

"It shows people want to come to Grimsby and want to manage Grimsby Town."

The Town supremo would not name names, but said he was impressed by the calibre of the candidates in the first couple of days.

"It's not our nature to reveal names but the quality of the candidates is high. Some are managers, some are ambitious assistants - there is a wide variety to look at and it is pleasing we've had such a response."

Caretaker boss Stuart Watkiss has not formally applied for the position, but it is understood that he hasn't been ruled out for a permanent appointment, and for the moment has at least one game to show what he can do.

Mr Fenty added: "We haven't set ourselves any deadlines - we are confident that the club is in safe hands with Stuart.

"He has our backing as caretaker - he hasn't told us he wishes to apply for the full-time job yet but he may be considering that.

"At the moment, we are assessing all applications and will probably look to start interviewing from the middle to the end of next week."

Grim Rob Says Whatever he achieves Watkiss is unlikely to be the high profile appointment that would get the fans flooding back to Blundell Park again.
